Recently needed some headers for my 1970 CUDA street/strip car and wanted to get something that fit without spending too much money. I recently got some used TTI's that had low miles, but stored outside and had some dings and discolor. Overall they look nice, but I'm not a fan of the 'shiny black chrome' that these are coated in. I could have bought new ones but cost was not permitting it ($1400). I was thinking of sandblasting these and rattle can them black, but I can see this not being long term for upkeep. So I want to leave the ceramic coating on and wrapped the headers. The plus to this is the ceramic would keep from rusting up too much, hide the fugly header color and possibly keep a little bit of the noise level down. So any suggestions on wraps, brands to use & maintenance?

Funny, they look chrome, not black, on my monitor...
They do look a bit too corroded to clean up nicely.
I've used the DEI brand from the local parts store, but it'll probably take at least 2 packages to do your deal.
You might try Speedway, Summit, or Jeg's.
You'll probably still have to blast or sand the flange areas and collector flanges & paint them if they're ratty.
Good time to make certain the sealing surface is dead flat.
I also like to cut away the bridge between the ports to eliminate warpage, improve access, and IMO improve the look.

There's a place about 45 min from my house called New Image, they ceramic coated my TTI Hemi headers for $275 and they came out beautiful.

I used to use Eastwood bright silver brush on header paint, I used a foam brush and that little can probably could have covered 12 sets of headers. It never flaked off of any of my headers.

I am not a fan of header wrap, seems to just rust out headers.

That is the polished ceramic finish. It turns purple after the engine goes thru a few heat cycles.

That is not ceramic coating on those headers. It is the chrome/nickel plating.
It isn't the polished ceramic coating either...that does not turn blue. I have a set of polished ceramic coated TTI headers and they end up looking like normal ceramic coating after a while. Definitely nothing like the chrome/nickel plated headers...which is what the OP has.

I've never been a fan of header wrap either. In my experience, that stuff dramatically accelerates rust issues on headers.

Thanks for the info everyone. Decided to just order a new set. By the time I do all the work and added costs, I can just get a new set. Still hate chrome/shiny headers so might order aset raw and try to find a decent black spray to coat them in.

Only wrap steel headers you want to disintegrate. The wrap elevates the coating/steel way beyond its acceptable heat range. At these higher temps the material oxidizes (rusts), the opposite of what you want, and many IMO wrongly assume its the wrapping trapping moisture, and it also "fatigues" the metal, ie causes the metal to overly expand from the high temp, and then has to at a norm temp contract all the way back, eventually fatiguing the metal until it wants to crumple after enough cycles. Cast Iron or stainless is more conducive metal for being wrapped

Yeah I've seen some guys with wrapped headers that had the problem where the headers just sort of fall apart after a few years. I've seen some high dollar turbo cars with the headers wrapped but I think they might be SST or Inconel.

I don't think I've ever seen the black ceramic coating. I'll have to hunt around for a picture of it. When I bought my TTi headers I went with the chrome ones. They turned purple within just a few hours of driving the car. I don't mind the purple color but some people probably don't like it.

Seems with single wall steel tubing the metal rots out from excess heat very quickly. Guys using 1970s Japanense motorcycles to build bobbers wrap the OEM exhaust and it works because its double wall tubing.

I did the Black Ceramic coating on my headers - it cost more than the regular silver/chrome looking ceramic - it looks like flat black paint but is as tough as nails

Maybe I'm lucky. Set of hooker headers on my charger for over 25,000 miles and over 15 years. Wrapped from day one and no issues yet.
This is a mild 440

Best then to never remove the wrap, you may not like what you find. Another telling sign that your situation might be different, and you didn't mention, but wrap, from my experience seldom lasts 25,000 miles.

If you mean have I re-wrapped the headers the answer is no. Same wrap. Its a mild combination and the engine has not been apart since installing it.
