Hi, I would like someone that has had to go through this change in sound & Exhaust in their E-body Mopar
I am in the process, of choosing a exhaust system, and choose the right mufflers for my 1970 Cuda with stock 383- 4speed Engine was kept stock, and just freshedn up..
CUDA ...still has original exhaust manifolds!
and has the original set up exhaust: 2- resonators before axel, and the 2-small round mufflers at the back before original tips!

Would like to change to little better sound..
Not Radical & LOUD great cruising sound .. dont want ears ring when get out car after ..1/2 hour drive??

Question?
I would like to install muffler system from front to back with just 2-mufflers, want anyone that has made this transformation from stock exhaust to more street friendly,
WITH- 2/12 inch Pipe... and 2-Mufflers, need help in deciding on Muffler brand?and not crazzy loud,
Need to be able to carry a conversation in car with friend if driving long distance, or listen to radio!

Would appreciate anyone's experience, gone through the change of exhaust, or opinion ....!
Than you so much, greatly appreciate your opinions...!
Sonny

You will probably want some resonators on there too, to keep the drone at bay. Just a pair of glasspacks (bullets) will do it. Any brand. I have used Dynomax Turbo mufflers with cheap glasspacks as resonators for many years on many cars. Cheap, flow good, can hear the radio, and no drone.

Use Dynomax polished stainless Ultra Flow #17283 for the resonators in front of the differential. Center/Center, straight through & no restriction, 14" long bodies - they will fit. You gotta decide on what you want to use at the rear. The old Walker Cuda mufflers used to sound great, but they were discontinued long ago. Dynomax has no 2.5" in/out round ones now in the Super Turbos.

Positioning hasn't mattered on my cars. Mufflers in front or mufflers in rear. I have the Dynamax mufflers in front of the axle with cheap glasspacks beside the gas tank on my Cuda now.

Hi,, Thank you for you time & sharing you experience with me!

just want to know what kind of sound you are getting with the mufflers in front of axel, & Glass packs next to tank??
Is the sound OK... when your on hyghway doing 60 miles hour.. can you listen to radio or carry a conversation with a friend in passenger seat?

I have to resonators bran new that are stock for 70 Plymouth Cuda I got from Dale's Cuda Supplier!
Could I add just ADD the glass packs next to tank now , or do you think I should replace the resonators with mufflers...? Since Resonators are not considered MUFFLERS????

Thank you so much for you time & Knowledge!

I have to correct myself, when I put the Hemi in the Cuda, I changed the mufflers from the Dynamax Turbos to the Ultra Flos. The reason is because the Ultra Flos are straight through. Which makes them flow better, but they are louder. I like the sound personally. The car sounds very similar to the way they sounded back when they were new since they often had glass packs installed. Besides, all these Magnaflows and Borla and the like makes our cars sound like the Mustangs and newer crap.

https://www.dynomax.com/mufflers

I do not know what our cars would sound like with a stock resonator for a muffler and glass packs out back. The Dynamax stuff isn't that expensive, so I would just make the change and be done with it. You don't need stainless or polished or anything like that, unless you show the underneath of your car.

The Ultraflos are like a glass pack but with a bigger outside diameter, straight through with more fiber glass packing around to absorb more sound. The actual glass packs (bullets) just have less fiber glass packing around the exhaust tube. And be aware that the fiber glass packing burns out over time. But it takes years. Because the cops would look under our cars back in the day to be sure we had mufflers, we would take new glass packs and soak the fiberglass with used engine oil, throw some gas on it, and light it to burn the fiber glass out. Basically straight exhaust. whistling

And yes, I can hear the radio and/or hold a conversation at road speed. It is noisy in the car with the wind and all, but I am comfortable with it. But the real killer for me is exhaust drone. I hate it so it is something I avoid at all costs. I also have Doug's electric cut-outs if I want real noise. up

you would need to hear mufflers in person..its the engine that can also make one car sound different than to another

I would suggest Hooker Aero Chamber mufflers. Great balance of flow/power and not too loud, but a great sound.

Dynomax Super Turbos are real popular, but VERY restrictive.

Dynomax Ultra Flows are great IMO, but a little loud for most folks.

I gotta correct you a little here. Dynomax Super Turbos (the oval ones) are not "very restrictive." They are the best turbo muffler on the market IMO, with large diameter internal flow tubes, & flow directors at each end of the muffler. As far as Hooker Aero Chambers, I remember Rick Ehrenberg using these on the 360 Valiant One Lap of America car & he said they were so loud, they had to stop along the way & install glasspacks in the tail pipes just so they could complete the circuit.

Correct? No...disagree. Saying the Super Turbos are the best turbo muffler on the market is like saying this turd smells the best...they're are all restrictive compared to a straight through style muffler. I realize the AeroChamber is a "chambered" muffler, but it still flows a lot better than a turbo muffler.
From my own experience, there is a big power difference b/t a good straight through style muffler and the Super Turbos.

Muffler sound is subjective. I have a pair of 4" Hooker Max Flows on my cuda and don't really care for them. They perform well, but the lack the bark IMO.
Performance/power is backed up by dyno and dragstrip tests...turbo mufflers never do well.
