I hate to have to drop the pan, but seems odd to me since pickup design has a relieve so that even if on the pan, it should not inhibit flow to cause a loss of pressure?

I was told years ago that the "touching" recommendation was to prevent the pickup from getting into a harmonic induced vibration and breaking at the threads. I have only personally seen this happen once on a '66 Hemi Coronet with a deeper pan that the pickup failed in this manner. twocents

I hope that is all it is. I had a similar case pop up out of no where. Everything was fine and after a high rev the pressure dropped from 75 to next to nothing at idle. Shut it down and let it sit and let oil drain back to the pan. Checked oil and added 1/2 quart and had 55 psi @ idle again??? When it ran for a while it would slowly lose pressure turned out to be the pickup was cracked where it screwed into the block and it would lose suction as more oil got stranded in the heads and the oil level would be under the crack. When full it was actually sucking oil threw the crack and keeping it from losing it's prime.

Trust me I just chased my own small block oil pressure issue. (see post) If it were cheap and easy anyone could do it. The key is realizing you have an issue and correcting it.
