For the first time in my life I am going to drive into he!!, I mean Long Island from Connecticut with a 24' enclosed trailer. Those of you that have done it please give me the insights. What is the best route, how much are the tolls, when is the best time to do it, and what about the Ferry from Bridgeport? I already looked up the cost for the Ferry at around $220 plus taxes, is it worth doing it? Any help would be appreciated... realcrazy

Take 95 over the Throggs Neck Bridge, the Whitestone is deeper into Queens and is a construction nightmare. It seems like they are always working on the bridge on the queens side. New York now sends you toll bills in the mail unless you have e-z pass. I'm not sure about toll cost, I have e-z pass so I don't pay attention to the cost, it auto replenishes.
There is a toll in New Rochelle, other than the bridge I don't know of anymore tolls. Throggs Neck is $9.50, that's the car rate. I would go after rush hous before construction. Beaches are a nuisance but that's over now. Saturday or Sunday morning are your best bet traffic wise, consider that because traffic coming off the island on Sunday can be a bear. DO NOT GET ON PARKWAYS WITH THE TRAILER! The fines will be hefty!

Jim,
It's not that bad. Take 95 to 495 to the the LIE the only tolls are the TNB and New Rochelle toll. Like said do not go on any parkways, no trailers on parkways. Stay on interstate hwys
If you are not sure give me a call 914-843-9617

Thanks guys, I do have an EZ-Pass so I will follow your advice. I accidentily got on a parkway a couple years ago with the enclosed trailer and got multiple people waving at me and flashing their lights. A bit later I saw some signs and got off quickly! LOL Yes I plan on heading back home ASAP after picking up in LI.

If you're Coming from CT you don't have to worry about the New Rochelle toll as it's not collected on the southbound side, it's collected northbound only.

LOL, I'm having flashbacks to my first trip heading out onto LI. Got on the BQE around 3PM on a Friday afternoon driving a Ford Excursion pulling a 28' enclosed car trailer. I didn't touch the gas pedal for about 5 hours...just on and off the brakes. I don't know how yall deal w/ that traffic all the time. What a nightmare.
Now when we drive through NY heading to Mass., I time it so I'm going through there after midnight.

Yep , When I was working for the chemical company a few years ago I had to make a delivery to Maspeth , Queens every Wednesday morning in a box truck from Rahway N.J. 26 miles , two hours at least one way via the BQE. The record for me was driving the tanker trailer from Mamaroneck, ( Westchester Cty. ) N.Y. back to Rahway sat on the Cross Bronx heading to the GWB for 4 1/2 hours. Any delivery to Long Island was an all day trip.

Good ole Chesire. Years ago I spun my open trailer 180 degrees on rt 84 in Chesire. 2 days before Christmas. Cops were in a giving mood and helped me get it turned around and no ticket. Landed a couple inches parallel to the guard rail. Was towing an extended full size Dodge van and not enough tongue weight and brakes were shorted out.

Hopefully the Saturday traffic won’t be a killer JB. Haven’t been up around the LIE/495 and rt. 112 in some time, a lot of lights, like was said ... Expressways not Parkways ... just saw a guy yesterday bagged on the Southern State Pkwy. towing a trailer with 4 jet skis on it...blindly follow gps...good luck👍

I got on a parkway in CT today for about 15 miles, got off as soon as I could as just south of me was backed up for miles. Had to go through downtown New Haven, hope I never have to do that again! I am staying in Stamford, CT tonight, so 91 miles left to go in the morning, then head back west ASAP!

I think the 695 is called the throgs neck expwy, yes, 95 to the throgs neck bridge, once over throgs neck, turns into the clearview expwy, about 2 miles or so to 495/lie 2 lane exit on right, e/b traffic is left lane to 495 East, watch speed on clearview, HWY patrol there can be tough, that exit for 495 can jam up with tractor trailers...

Just a reminder, NO, PARKWAYS!!! There are quite a few of them in that area and they are for cars only, No trailers of any kind are allowed. The signs are also well marked saying no trucks or trailers. While you don't have to worry about making your trailer an open top, you can get nailed for having it on a parkway.. If you're using a car type GPS it won't tell you that no trailers are allowed. A truck GPS shouldn't even direct you to one.
