This movie, along with Rocky, had profound impacts on me that stick with me today. I was 9 years old when JAWS came out. I saw it in the theater then numerous times on HBO. I LOVED it! I drew pictures of sharks, I wrote cartoon like comic books about them, I read books, wrote book reports, saw other movies about them. I still quote the movie from time to time. I love the ocean, the surf and the sand but I rarely get to go see it.
Rocky....
I loved that one too. I did the one armed push-ups, drank the raw eggs, jogged in sweats and shadow boxed. Dad bought me 2 pair of boxing gloves and I sparred with every kid in the neighborhood that was willing, even the bigger kids. I was a tough kid, I didn't cry, I just grunted, yelled and came back sort of like Rocky did! Dad and I formed a bond with those movies. We watched boxing matches together, we went to 2 events in Sacramento featuring Pete Ranzany, a Sacramento favorite in the late 70s.

I’m 64 years old now and from the time I was five years old to probably around 17 years old we spend two weeks around the 4th of July with friends at Myrtle Beach South Carolina. We lived to swim in the ocean riding the waves in on rafts or walking out to the sand bars out 80-100 yards from the beach. One time a Sting Ray came flying out of the water slapping back down on the surface. That moved us in towards the beach like right now. That was about our last time out that far. Ocean city Md has a way different type of beach and lifeguards are calling you back in way before that. The nearby fishing pier has shark night twice a week for the fishermen. After Jaws I’m happy about knee deep or less. Lol. Any deeper than that the Jaws song starts playing in my head. The migration of White Sharks has really changed over the years now that Seals are protected in the upper States. Tagged sharks are tracked on their trip between Massachusetts and Florida.

jaws scared the hell out of me being a kid.
Till today I feel uncomfortable to swimm in water which might have dangerous sharks

Heck, the risk to die in an accident with one of my old Mopars with bias ply tires is higher than getting killed by a shark but.......

Back in the good old days when you could wait in lines forever only to miss out getting in because it sold out a couple of people in front of you.

Grew up in Destin and then Tampa back in the '60s. Thought nothing of swimming in the Gulf.
Until the movie Jaws came out, LOL.
Here's a cool shark tracker site. Great Whites cover a lot of ground: https://www.ocearch.org/?details=368

That was interesting, I'm surprised how coastal they appear.

Jaws was a masterpiece IMO. Back in the late 60's, there was an issue of National Geographic all about sharks - I was consumed by it! I still have this issue today. I became a sharkaholic - I just could not get enough. By the time Jaws came out (1975?), I couldn't wait. We all loved the movie & thought it was so well done - it scared the hell out of us! I also feel it is one of the most quotable movies ever - I use certain lines from it often, & even my daughters do too.

RIP Robert Shaw, Roy Scheider, & others who have since passed on. They sure left us all a timeless movie that will live forever.

I enjoyed the movie, but decades later, this minor detail in the movie stuck with me much more poignantly:

If you have never read a book about the sinking of the Indianapolis, it's well worth it. I have 3 books about it - one book is a compilation of stories as told by the survivors, & one survivor signed the copy I have. Fascinating stories. It was pure random luck the plane spotted them at all. One more day, & the 317 likely would have perished. An absolutely tragic & amazing story.

I remember Lee Marvin saying in an interview that he was either asked to read or audition for the role of "Quint", the boat Captain played by Robert Shaw. Marvin was an arrogant SOB, saying that "Jaws was a piece of junk".
I can't imagine any other actor at the time that could have played the role of Quint as well as Robert Shaw did.
That has always interested me: The actors that were considered for blockbuster movies but didn't get the role.

Yes I agree 100%, and I have decades back read a books and accounts of the sinking and aftermath.

I suggest anyone that thinks that times might be tough for them, reviewing this story might put their problems in a better perspective.

I believe i discovered maybe 20? separate distinct events leading up to the sinking , that singly had gone different, the tragedy never would have gone so bad.

The standout hero IMO, is the seaplane pilot who disobeyed orders to return to base and instead landed his plane to stay with nearly dead sailors in the water.

An Honorable mention certainly goes to the captain of the warship who in the hostile Pacific waters in a War, lit up his warship like a Christmas tree at night as he cruised from a distance to the remaining sailors to give them a glimmer of hope of being rescued. That image gives me goose bumps.

PBY pilots were always instructed NEVER to land in open ocean, & you are correct - the pilot who did saw the situation & decided to land anyway. The crew could see men getting eaten by the relentless sharks which was the decisive factor in them landing. Men were packed inside the plane, & all over the wings & wherever else they could climb. Most of the men were far too weak to lift themselves out of the water - it was horrendous.

The Indy went from Tinian without an escort after dropping the final components of "the device" which was highly AGAINST protocol, & always very suspect ever since the sinking. Just a few days earlier, a Japanese sub had been sighted in the same waters, which made the Indy voyage without escort even far more peculiar. The Navy never offered a satisfactory reason as to why they ordered Captain McVay to travel alone. McVay survived the sinking, but received hate mail from families of those who perished until he finally took his own life around 1968. He carried tremendous guilt with him all those years & finally couldn't take it anymore. It was quite a story.

I remember trying several times to take a date to see it but couldn't get in. Both times we got there only to find out they were selling tickets for the next show (about 2 1/2 hrs. later, IIRC). I had drove down to the south side of Atlanta to help a friend work on his car and on the way back noticed a walk-in where Jaws was playing. Thought WTH, it's worth a shot since it's 3 in the afternoon on a Wenesday. Walked right in and watched it with maybe 10 other folks. Never told my girlfriend what I did and we finally saw it together several weeks later.
