I'm starting to look seriously ahead at buying painting equipment.

For those that paint, what is your preferred HVLP equipment brands ?
This is strictly auto painting, not houses, etc.

imo the original is still the buy on the planet and works the best also , ACCUSPRAY was bought by 3 m. Do not buy the one with plastic throw away nozzel . bought mine in the 90's have e4 of the i use one for clear only and one for base coats , and one for all primers and of course a spare . recieved 3 nozzel , fliud caps and fluid tips wit each gun. but are a pain to clean thoroughly. just the cap .

i am a PPG certified painter. been PPG certified since the late 80's.

i have 5 Sata 5000 spray guns. 3 are WSB, designed for water base coat. all 5 have 1.3 tips
i spray clear with Iwata supernova with a 1.2 tip.

the above listed spray guns are list priced at about $700 each.

Why do you caution against getting the version with the disposable nozzle? Just curious as I have looked at that model and at first glance it seems like you eliminate a lot of cleaning.

Are you going to do this regularly and for pay? Or are you just going for hobby type of work? Whole cars or mostly panel work?

I see very good paint jobs come out of $150 guns. And I see some real crap come out of expensive guns. There is a lot more to a good paint job than just the gun. The gun is really only one piece of the puzzle.

Same goes for paint booths.

How experienced are you now? If not real experienced, think about an affordable gun to learn on. There will be mistakes and maybe even accidents such as dropping. May as well let a less expensive gun take that use and abuse. Then after you get handy with it, step up to a better gun and keep that old one for back-up.

For an affordable gun, especially for panels, the DeVilbiss Starting Line is a good gun.

I think if I'm going to do it I will take the plunge. I've been reading over on autobody101.com.
The Fuji Q-5 5 stage turbine, although I'm still undecided on the guns.

Thing is, everytime I look into this, I get sidetracked by looking at big air compressors, which I also need.
In theory I could shoot pretty much anything the car needed with the Fuji turbine.

The BEST gun reminds me of the pro golfer, he can wear your butt out using a rake and a shovel, so it’s not always the ‘tool’ but the man holding it.

Shop at the paint stores where the pros get their paint. Explain what you want, they want your business and most will give good help. Even at small shops the painters will help you out when they understand you’re just playing in your own garage and not competition.

we use this gun as a shop primer gun.

after about 300 uses the replaceable tips no longer want to stay clipped on the gun. we use a cheap "C" clamp to hold the tip on. i myself don't use it. i use my sharpe cobalt primer gun i have used for 20 years.
also after a couple of uses the tips don't really want to spray / atomize like they used to when new. so you need a new tip. i think the tips are about $3 each. wash thinner is about $5 a GALLON.
yes they clean pretty easy but cleaning a spray gun isn't really that hard. if you ask me the replaceable tips cost much more than the thinner savings on cleaning.

to the OP.
the shopline guns from delvilbiss are OK . they aren't really that bad, but keep in mind they really aren't that good either. they are priced pretty reasonable and they seem to handle abuse pretty good.
as other posted the person holding the spray gun is more important than the gun itself.

I own a painting company... 40 years worth! accuspray is a great gun and the turbine kits will mean no compressor no dryer.... this unit is best known for standing up the flakes in metallic paints evenly . its simple to use . I have 1 unit in service still from the 90's .......it will lay down paint as good as anything made. most hvlp guns don't spray very wide.. this one does.

I’m sure my Croix is the same gun-system, a lot of different names. I also have used mine since the 80s (guns are almost wore out but usable). Imo the most important piece is the adjustable air valve just before the gun. Really nice to fine tune the spray. I have the HVLP guns that use shop air but they always have to much overspray and don’t work as nice as the garden hose one. The best part, you buy a gallon and 98% of the paint goes on the product not as mist in the air. I’ve painted hundreds if not thousands of cabinets and a few cars and never used a paint booth, in fact I painted my race car, pearl yellow (95 RT Stealth) in my house garage and no yellow paint on anything but the car. Nothing on the floor or walls. A little apprehensive at first with over $800 of DePont paint but went on like a dream base, pearl, clear. Same cap and nozzle, took about a hour and that’s cleaning and standing around waiting on the flash from base and pearl.

My guys generally preferred Sata or Iwata guns, sometimes it was like Ford vs Chevy laugh2...our market was high-end Euro cars, FWIW.
Most shops always had an old DeVilbiss or Binks primer gun even into the '90s. Those things seemed bulletproof !
I've done alright on a couple small jobs with a HF gun, but the fan isn't as adjustable as I'd like.
But as noted it's the operator that's the key.
This talk about Croix & Accuspray is intriguing, never thought of those for automotive painting.

I have sprayed many cars with them.[ based on experience] they don't waste any paint ... they are not messy... they don't have air/water issues... they spray -really- nice . just get the correct air cap for the nozzle being used....I used a ton of chroma base metallic and clear coats in 99-2000's .I could have tweaked it and never have anything to wet sand and buff If I really worked at it!!

i have never really used a croix gun.
i seriously doubt they could actually atomize the high solids base coats and clears used on today's cars.

clear coats had mid 20% solids back in the early 2000's and at the time such high solids was phenomenal. today's low VOC clears are about 45% solids. for comparison purposes lacquer paint is about 5% solids.
i USE to have 4 accuspray guns in the mid 2000's. they work pretty good with low solids solvent base base coats. in the mid 2000's they upped the solids in the base coat to get it VOC compliant. they couldn't spray it properly so i sold them.

in my opinion the best atomizing spray gun for high solids clears is the Iwata supernova gun. nothing else is close.
i use mine to spray about 2 GALLONS a WEEK, sometimes 3 or 4 of high solids clear coat.
for water base coat most any manufacturer water base specific guns will do just fine. and yes water specific spray guns will spray solvent no problem. they have high purity stainless tips and linternal passages to spray water base coat without rusting.
