Regarding the locking ring/snap ring supplied. Is it to be located on the inside of the brake backing plate (between the axle housing and the brake backing plate) or outside (between the retainer and the brake backing plate)?
I am betting on the former, but want to be absolutely sure (unit has stock drums).

Thanks for replying

Does this help...snap ring towards axle flange, o’rings get inserted into axle housing first.

So, you are saying axle flange, brake backing plate, snap ring, then retainer?

Install one axle housing gasket then the backing plate and then the axle with another gasket between the backing plate and axle retainer between the snap ring and the axle end and then tighten the 5 retaining nuts down up wrench
It has been a while since I've install a axle so when in doubt call, contact the company you bought them from for their proper instructions scope

Thanks for replying, gentlemen,

Sure grip391; You mean that the snap ring should be behind the brake backing plate (on the axle housing side or inside of that plate)?
Cab: You mean that the snap ring is to be on the outside of the brake backing plate?
I am still confused.
I wrote dr diff this morning for clarification. Don´t know when they will reply, so if any of you is absolutely sure of where the snap ring should be, please don´t hestitate to write a reply.

Have the bearing pressed on as shown in my pic. Snap ring facing down. O’ring up. I got these axles from DoctorDiff.

Suregrip391 thanks for your input. I have already pressed the bearing on to the axle in the correct manner.
The issue here is not in which order the snap ring and the O ring sit on the bearing; it is only if the location of the snap ring should be inside or outside of the brake backing plate when mating the axle shaft into the housing.

I’m pretty sure it’s inside the housing resting on the lip. Since I don’t fully understand, Ill bow out and let a pro answer this. I’ll attach some pics of what mine looks like in case it helps. Sorry....

Also, don’t forget To use the fibre looking gasket between the brake backing plate and 5-hole wheel bearing retainer, it comes with the bearings. If you don’t, the retainer will bend over the snap-ring.

Doctor Diff has replied to my question:

"The snap-ring installs against the outside surface of the drum brake backing plate. In other words, the backing plate does not double as a wheel bearing retainer. Don't forget to place the special fiber gasket around the snap ring between the backing plate and 5-hole retainer."

Thanks to those who responded on Moparts.

Ragnar
