That will change when you hit the first hill.

Usually the automatic fuel economy gauge is pretty easy to get a great mileage reading from. I had a car that had one of those, one time I got 50 mpg rolling down a hill with my foot off the gas pedal, it dropped to about 6 going up the next hill, but I could have taken a picture when it read 50 mpg and bragged about the great gas mileage. The car, in reality averaged about 21 mpg. Gene

I gave an honest rep to the situation...

ABSOLUTELY... the MDS shuts off at the slightest incline and the mpg reading does drop off....

The PROOF is a good MPG read on a trip ... I’m planning a trip to the Keys ... and Alligator Alley SR41 has a speed limit of like 55.

The MDS really helps for sure. I have a '18 Mustang GT we just took on a trip out west a couple weeks back. Hand calculated mileage on a couple legs across South Dakota at 80+ miles an hour, cruise and AC on.....25-27 mpg. Not bad for 460 hp with no MDS/DOD..I was very happy!

30 is pretty normal, problem is you lose everything you saved once you punch it from the first stop light you come across lol

In your previously posted picture I could see the RPM, which was about 1650 if I recall.

If instead of MDS and 4 cyl mode,
running all 8 cylinders
with a geartrain ratio that puts the engine at about 1200 RPM
with VVT changing camshaft specs to optimum
would give an even higher MPG.
This would also let the vehicle climb a steeper hill than what MDS can do in 4 cyl mode.

But...... on an even steeper incline
or when wanting to accelerate and pass another vehicle,
the driver In 8 cyl mode would feel the slight jerk of the needed down shift,
but MDS goes away with minimum jerk.

Over the life of the vehicle MDS probably wastes 1000 gallons of gasoline
compared to 8 cylinder with optimum gear ratios.

Is it worth this wasted money to avoid the....gasp....horrible mental pain of more frequent shifting?

If you understand engine BSFC (brake specific fuel consumption) maps,
you are very accepting of more frequent shifts, it gives you peace of mind.

with most modern muscle cars that mileage is about normal for highway driving.
i get 25mpg, hand calculated, on the freeway, 70+ mph, on long trips with my 08 Bullitt mustang. has supercharged 4.6 3V motor that makes 650 rwhp on pump 93 octane gas W/ 6 speed tr6060 trans.
i get about 18 around town with normal driving.
when i drive it like a rental car it's about 3-5 mpg. this is a guess because i never had calculated it.

It would be very interesting if one could somehow try that modern TR-606 on an older Ram pickup.
2.96 first gear
0.77 fifth gear
0.50 sixth gear

Back in the '90s, I used to occasionally borrow a friend's Aerostar van to run parts down I-5 between SF & LA.
It had an "instant MPG" readout thingie.
It was pretty entertaining watching it change when drafting, passing, and clearing big rigs.
It was interesting to see the effects of the bow wake those things put out - instant MPG plummeted until you cleared the nose by several feet.

I climbed hills with mine, you just need to really feather the throttle aka hyper mile it (long inclines on the highway). Remember even in 4cyl its still a 3.2L !

Cool picture.
I know for a fact that my Dodge Ram 2500 354 in the rear A/C blowing got 28 Hwy. empty on long trips.
My Honda Silver Wing Got 45 -50 with the cruise set. I would love another one. Water-Cooled shaft-driven bike smooth with great MPG for 1800 bucks new. I should have bought 2 and picked one up in the crate.
