There is a few post going on about what color front suspension parts should be and how to obtain that color. The truth is first you have to see what color was the part originality, black, natural iron or cosmoline. Then it is up to the person doing the work to determine what are they going to do with the car, drive it, trailer queen or both. If it is a trailer queen then cosmoline and natural, uncoated iron will work just fine but I personality I plan on driving this thing and I don't want rust poping up or cosmoline geathering bugs and dirt. I want my car to look as good as it goes. So this is how I duplicated the look of iron front end parts and with the many coats of paint they should last a very long time.
Here is my knuckles, caliber brackets and center link.

What I did was sand blast the part (A good cleaning with a degresser and a wire brush will also work) and I shot the whole part with Krylon satin black. After that I fogged the part with Eastwood Spry Gray making sure I just barley misting the parts giving the part a gray tint. Then comes the Krylon Satin Clear. It takes a little practice but I'm very happy with the way it comes out. Total cost....$16.50

On parts with cosmoline I clean the part, shoot it with Eastwood Spay Gray and then I use the Eastwood Anti Rust Inhibitor or everybody else calls it cosmoline. After letting it dry for FOUR DAYS (I'm not kidding) It is still tacky to the touch so I shoot it with Krylon Satin Clear. This makes it so you can touch the parts and wipe it clean if it gets dirty but don't rub it to hard because it will come off. I'm still trying to come up with something that will harden 100% but till then this will do.

Troy Heres something you can try, to simulate cosmoline I tried the Eastwood stuff, like you found it doesn't dry, so I tried other products & found Krylon battery corrosion spray, it lays down semi transparent, with a yellow/brownish appearance, by recoating you can darken the part as desired, it drys completely, its acid proof  I did it over ten years ago & it held up well for the first six or seven years but in the last few I used a more aggressive cleaner on the frontend & it lightened the color some, if I really cared I could recoat it, but I really just drive the car anymore & while I keep it up pretty good I don't sweat those type of details much..

That is a good one, I'll give it a try. I tried the Eastwood Carburetor paint and it just did not do it.
Another paint that I picked up was a Krylon paint called Hammered (or something like that) It is a gray paint that dries with a texture and it dries both light and dark gray color to it.

For cosmoline, we used the gold can from the 3 can package for gold cad. from Eastwood. And then a can of Chebby dark gold. My buddy in Red Deer uses varnish. Then if it get's chipped or time to clean, he brushes some more on.

Be careful with the Satin Clears, they will yellow especially if they are around heat. Nice work.

After reading all of this I'm think of finding the right shade of Minwax and and trying that on the LCA's
 
I "heard" this was the method used to coat/paint parts like the torsion bars and the reason they have the drips on them (along most of the length, what I would assume was the bottom?)

We float paint and dip small parts fairly often. It looks very close to NOS parts, defenatly how some were done. I like your idea for LCA's, maybe tinted clear would work better?

Well Randy, I like your style. I got the Krylon battery and I'm very happy with it. It dries hard and looks good. I think it is the closes I have seen so far. Here are some pictures.
