OK need some new rear tires
currently have a p235/70r15 on a 15x7 american 5 spoke, back space 3.5

would like to use a p275/60r15 on a 15x8 5 inch backspace
66 Belvedere I stock length 8 3/4 ss spring in stock location.

what do you think? have more room now to the spring than to the wheel lip probably have to trim the wheel lip on the quarter panel as it extends in towards the tire

I get a better patch with 275s on 10" rims. The 8" rims pull the edges off the pavement. Have you measured how much rubber is in contact with the 235s on 8" rims? I haven't tried it, so I don't know. But my experience with the 275s is that they like the 10" rims. 235s might be happier on 8s and do as well as 275s on 8s. twocents

there is no way to get a 10 inch rim on this car. the wheelhouse area is a lot smaller than a later b or e body

Exactly what I have on my 62 wagon,78 Ramcharger 15x8, 5 1/2 back spacing 3/4" from spring 1" from fender lip. Don't know how the 62 wheel opening compares with 66.

I think you have small wheel wells. P255/60R15's in the back of my 51. Room for much more. 295's easy, maybe even 305's if I can get the perfect backspacing.

I put a pair of the newer 15x8 torque thrusts (4.5 backspace) with 275-60x15 mastercrafts on the back of my '65 coronet. easy install and really like them.

I was not suggesting the 10" rims for your application.

The 5" BS will help but a lot of it comes down to the section width of the tire. I looked at section widths as much as I did the tire size. On my 67 I'm have 15 x 8 on 4.5"BS steel wheel with M/T ET street 255/60 that fits in there nicely. A 275/60 will work with a 4.5 BS on a 7" wheel with a smaller section width but it will still be tight on the quarter panel side. These cars are very space limited as opposed to earlier and later B bodies.

when you say tight on the quarter panel side, is that at the lip of the wheel opening or is it where the inner wheel housing curves in towards the wheel a few inches above the wheel opening?

if i'm not mistaken, that is the factory "wrapping" used up to about 57 or 58 [?] that was supposed to contain a kind of grease that kept the leaves from binding against each other.

Could be both scenarios. Its definitely tight at the wheel lip (may need trimmed) and depending on the tire height and section width of the tire it can be tight in the upper wheel house too. And, also consider the leaf spring as well. If the springs are worn and "squatty" you can run into problems there as well. I advise to go on the smaller side with tire and wheel combos if you are leaving everything in a stock configuration.
