I just replaced the 2 brake hoses, 2 calipers,1 rotor and brake pads on the front of my 1980 Ferd Van.

Took it for a spin and started smelling hot brakes.

Pull over and the passenger side is smoking a little from around the brakes. I limp it home and jack up the passenger side. Try to spin the tire and I get nothing. STUCK!!!I dissassemble the passenger side brake, use a C Clamp and compress the piston back into the caliper, and reassemble. All is spinning ok until I go in the vehicle and depress the brake. I go back over to the passenger side and the darn rotor wont spin..Stuck Again.

What am I missing here, whats causing this and how do i fix it? Could it be a bum Caliper the parts store gave me? The piston is coming out and compressing the brakes and not letting go.

Sounds like it was a loaded caliper from the store.

Yes the piston is sticking and not going back in. Call the store and ask about their warrenty.

Bad caliper, as Tom pointed out.

I had to replace the calipers on my Ferd Pick-up. The same thing happened to me.I could smell it getting hot and felt the rim after getting home and yes it was very hot. The caliper was sticking. Replaced both, problem solved.Jay

It could be a bad brake hose too, they can collaspe and not let the pressure bled back. If the hose is cracked and weathered replace it.

He said he did the hose. I haven't seen a new hose do that, but with the junk now?
It's going to be the caliper (90%) or the pins weren't serviced and checked (10%). I've seen some pretty bad pins on vehicles where they just stuffed pads the first 120K.

You can verify the caliper is the bad part by cracking open the bleeder screw when the caliper is stuck. If it's still stuck after opening the bleeder it's the caliper, if not something up stream is holding the pressure.

I went in did a 1 for 1 exchange on the caliper under warranty(which I just bought on Saturday) and it resolved the problem.

I know it happens sometimes, but doenst it suck when you buy a new part, only for it to have the same problem as the core you just turned in.

You must be very lucky or never bought at places like Kragen, Chucks, Pep Boys, Harbor freight etc.

Allen Here's a novel idea, let's not throw a bunch of parts at the car hoping it will fix the problem and instead spend a little time diagnosing it first. Life was a little easier when I was just a wrench.

I just R&R'd the tin intake gaskets on my 318 (2)times then a fel pro composition set(1) time & found out it was the felpro ~1/4" square bore base gasket(a new install of an eddy streetmaster & an eddy 1406) & in each of the 4 corner holes there are 4 brass inserts & they were a bit taller than the gasket itself & caused a massive vac leak. the carb seemed to torque down solid. Took it back & the new one they had was the same way so I bought it & lightly flattened each brass insert installed it & purrs perfect.

My point exactly!

I assume the remain parts will most likely not work the first time and when they do I am surprised. Lately they have been getting better for whatever reason. Maybe I'm getting lucky

Glad you got it fixed!
A friend went through 5 starters for his mom's 2.2 Caravan before getting a good one. They are not easy to swap!

You might want to change the title to reflect the update, problem solved.
So few come back and document what fixed the problem!
