Hi all,
I am going to look at a bare 1975 400 block that a guy has for sale. Is there anything I should look for or rather look out for when inspecting it?
Thanks all

Since I guess you can not sonic check it for thickness, I like to look at the boss where the cam bearings are machined. If the boss is off to one side compared to the actual cambearing hole, I suspect casting shift, and would have it sonic checked before using. Their used to be a number cast into the block that told how many times the mold had been used. The idea was the lower the number the less likely core shift was, but I never had much luck with it working out. So look down the block and eyeball for shifting in where the call goes in, to see if it is not true or not? Ok, got it? Crackback - Thanks, I was going to look around oiling holes and webbing for cracks Thanks! Mike

Check for any visible cracks or gaulling in the cylinders and how much of a ridge at the top of the cylinders.
