Wifes 2015 Jeep Grand Cherokee (42k miles) started puffing blue smoke upon startup after sitting overnight. I originally started to smell exhaust in the house everytime shed backup from the garage. About two weeks ago, I took it out and it puffed so bad I thought someone walked behind the car because it popped up on the rear view mirror.

I took a video of it to Jeep but they said they couldn't get it to repeat. Said they're allowed to burn up to a quart every 2k miles before they have reason to go into it, and the video wasn't enough for them to justify looking further.

Anyone ever have this issue with the smoke, or know if that response is par for the course with dealers these day? She's under warranty until December.

Sounds like valve stem seals.

^^^ That's what I'm thinking. I've had that deal before, but not at 42K. More like 80-100K, on an old SBC...
However, I've heard some of the 2.0 Mopars had a PCV issue that had similar symptoms.

As far as "that's normal, they all do that"...that's a legendary response.
In fairness, though, the tech needs to have the same conditions to observe a problem.

Call 1-800-992-1997. Speak to a customer service agent and advise them you would like to meet with a FCA business center rep at the dealer about your problem. There are oil consumption tests that have to be met before the dealer will work on the engine but crop dusting is not acceptable. Have you checked to see how much oil you use in 1K miles?

Nicely tell them that crop dusting doesn’t look good either.

Thanks for that info, will call them today.

We checked the oil at the dealership and it was down a full quart after roughly 4k miles. The same dealership performed the oil change. They advised me to get another change done, ensuring the level was at full, and then bring it in every 1k. Not ideal but I can do that if need be.

Does it do this at EVERY cold start now? My 2016 Challenger 392 (6,000 miles) will do this occasionally on a cold start, but not every time. I was reading somewhere that this can happen if the car is run for a very short distance (like around the block) & then you shut it down. The next time you start it, it will puff. I've been watching for this lately & this year so far, I'm taking it out for a good drive & it comes up to full temp. Next cold start, no smoke. So far...............

That is way too much for the 3.6 and not nearly enough mileage for the seals. My wife has 92k on her Jeep unlimited and we have zero issues. Her old 2008 Liberty went thru some oil (3.7) but never smoked. My neighbors daughter has is now, well over 115k no issues.

Yeah - I do not hear any clattering or noise at startup, plus I have not heard any of the "Hemi tick" with this motor. Now my former 2012 Chall R/T with the 5.7 had the tick & lifter noise at startup. Sold that one with 7,000 miles in 2015.

Wife has a 2018 Jeep Compass with a 2.4L engine. We go through a quart of oil every 2500-3000 miles. It doesn't have over 10k on it yet. I am going in for an oil change and will make sure the dealer annotates it in the computer. We don't take long trips with it and not a lot of miles on it so it's about a quart between oil changes. Do an oil change once every year or less to keep it per the manual for the warranty. We usually don't get to the recommended mileage on any vehicles between oil changes so we generally go time frame for changes. Some say go longer, but I keep it within the manual time frames for the warranty. I am keeping an oil add log and will print it out for the dealer when I take it in.
