no way would there be a sensor there because you would have no way to attach to any kind a gauge or reader. Also from the carbon build up you can tell there was nothing in those holes.

Those little widgets are called EGR Jets. They are a factory installed, old time emissions item. Chrysler did it.
Yours were plugged with carbon which is a common issue with basically anything associated with the heat crossover on most anything.
Not many folks know or care about things like that anymore, but if you take apart a bunch of old smog era motors you will encounter them in the future.

Thanks for the inputs on these EGR jets / floor jets. What threw me is that I didn't think EGR stuff appeared on 440's until 1973 - I got that info from the 440 Source website, which has a great page that shows pictures of all the 440 manifolds ever made, by casting date, and a short description. Here's the link: http://www.440source.com/intakes.htmAt any rate, I was able to remove them fairly easily, and I cleaned them up - I've attached a photo for those who have never seen these before, they're new to me. I'm not sure what size plug these are (?), they seem to have some very coarse threads. I'll probably just put some JB Weld into their little holes and stick them back in. Since I'm going to block the heat crossovers with a valley pan, their shouldn't be much risk of a vacuum leak with these little buggers (but holler if that's a bad assumption).

'72s are cool, but can be weird with things like that. Just my opinion but it always seemed a transitional year.
You don't have to bother plugging those holes with anything at all if you're going to block the crossover with a felpro 1215 or similar. Just get it really clean, either re install the jets or toss them, use the 1215 gasket and run it.
The aftermarket holley street dominator, torker, weiand 7512 and so on all have open egr holes in the bottom, have all been run mostly open for decades that way and it just doesn't seem to affect anything.
If you feel strongly you have to plug it, rather than jb weld I would suggest drill and tap for common NPT rather than search for whatever oddball threads the plugs are.
Of course an even easier way out is a '71 intake casting 3512501 or an aftermarket aluminum/stock replacement style.
Good luck.
