Need new siding for the house. Have some ratty aluminum on there now. Thinking about the LP Smartside. Anyone have experiences with this stuff, good or bad. It seems pricey compared to vinyl but has a better look.

Thanks!

There is a lot more to installing it than a regular vinyl material...

More and different tools are required...

I would think the labor to install it vs. traditional vinyl is probably double... twocents

There are a lot of nice products out on the market for the exterior walls...LP Smartsiding is not the only choice...

I used a vertical board and batten design for the front of my garage. The material is PVC plastic...

It was labor intensive and had it's own quirks of do's and don't s during installation.

It works and looks good, make sure you add the price to caulk it all with polyurethane, and 2 coats of good paint like SW superpaint. You will need to keep edges painted, so it needs constant edge paint attention the first few years, that is the price you pay for the better look. I like to hit all cut edges with oil base primer. Stay away from some of the shake look alike, and ornamental smartside, as it is masonite, they sell one that is wax treated strand constuction, but$$$ and special order. I have some almost 20 year old smart side, keep it caulked and the edges painted and it will last. Cement may be a good choice, but looks funny, and sometimes has paint adhesion problems. There is no perfect choice. The ratty or new aluminum is hard to beat for something that lasts, maybe pull it, seal up what is under it, house wrap, and put aluminum back on.

Smartside is a world all it's own. You CANNOT install it like other siding materials. EVERY cut or bare edge (whether cut for length or ripped for width) HAS to be primed with a high-quality oil-based primer, and finished with a high-quality paint. Gaps are very very important, as are sealants. It's a LOT of prep work, and takes a while to install properly. Most don't take the time or install correctly, and the base material for smartside, as far as I'm concerned, is recycled cr@p. Installed correctly and faithfully maintained every year, it will last. Skip steps and you're looking at problems a few years out. If you're serious about installing it, be sure to read or view all you can about installation and maintenance before you buy any.

Thanks for the replies. I don't want to do the install, too many other things going on. Will likely find someone locally to put the stuff up. We have older, hail damaged aluminum and not sure I want to go that route. The misses likes the LP or Hardie look. I've read through the instructions on a number of products and will likely have to keep a watchful eye on the install with what ever goes on the house.

Anyone have or know of a good installer in the Chicago area?
