So this came up in the Q&A forum... after spinning my wheels for a week trying to help out my car-loving-but-mechanically-challenged Brother with an issue on his 8-3/4 rear axle.. rolleyes ..anyone else got stories we wouldn't believe?

Here's one from last summer. Same brother of mine...

One week they all come to visit us, it's him with his wife and 4 kids, driving 4 hours to see us in his '68 RoadRunner.. I asked how the trip went "How did the car behave?" knowing it ALWAYS needs some TLC when it gets here...

He says "Well, it had a wicked shimmy at any speeds above 55mph. And THAT was annoying, but it kinda went away above 70mph so, ya know, I just kinda either drove fast or slow to keep it under control..".
and the he said ".. I think I need to rebuild the front end.."..

So I'm like "Okaaaayy, did you check any of it, did you see anything?" He said "No, it just felt that way"
I said "Let's start with the easy things - have you checked the tires?"
...we had a look at his tires and .. well, I called Walmart from the driveway and had him order a new set.

Here's what his ancient who-knows-what brand red-line tires looked like after we got them off the car...the Fd up one that doesn't look like any of the others was his right front tire. And he had driven on these all last summer with the entire family.. Death trap if you ask me. blush realcrazy

Never in my life have I seen a car driven with a more Fd up tire..

I had a old 69 340 swinger, at 125mph on front tire would start to squeal and it went all summer like that till it blew.

Years ago, I had a belt break in the tire, but not blow the tire.

Crusing along at about 60MPH, when all of a sudden BLAM eek truck is thrown sideways and I'm headed for a ditch! I kept it between the ditches, pulled over and jumped out to see which tire blew. Imagine my surprise when none of them were flat! shock confused Looking more closely, I saw that one tire had a huge bulge in it.

I limped it to a safer place to throw on the spare, it never did pop.

And then, several years back, I had an old tire in the back of the wagon that I used more for a roller than an actual spare that blew its belt apart just sitting in the wagon. shock

In both cases, they were Firestone brand tires.

laugh2 iagree

LOL. yeah... do you think he LEARNS from these incidents, thinks about maintenance, or actually cracks open the FSM periodic maintenance chart, or even the Owner's Manual in the glovebox? Does he bring any spare parts, points, belts, tools, fluids or an intact spare tire in the trunk? Nope. He prefers to just get in and turn the key.. with wifey and all four kids.. (front bench w 3 seatbelts, plus the 3 rear belts so everyone is safely strapped in) and rely on the kindness of strangers or me to bail him out. Knock on wood, he's never been badly stranded. One thing that he DOES know is all kinds of Mopar history: Model options, engines, transmission options, model year colors, VIN and data plate decoding, etc, etc.. You could think of him as a Mopar Nerd.

Story number 2:

Another family visit to our house for a week, and I ask him how the trip was...

"Well, the brake pedal is traveling a lot further down towards the floor these days. I'm not getting a whole lotta braking. But I discovered they work fine if I pump the brake pedal once or twice." no

I suggested there could be air in the brake lines. Ya know, because AIR is NOT how hydraulics work? So I asked if he wants to, we can check the brake fluid level and bleed the brakes. He says "Sure! That sounds like a great idea."...

We started by opening the MC lid to have a look. To my surprise, there WAS fluid in both the reservoirs. But WHAT kind of fluid was anyone's guess... I think he put @%#$ Italian dressing in there! I sucked it all out with a turkey baster and flushed it for fresh DOT3..

(sorry the pics are sideways, just a computer glitch).

..anyway - THIS is what I sucked out of his MC...
