where do you tap in to get a vacuum reading from the crank case evacuation pump. First time vac pump user. Pictures would be appreciated.Thanks. Birdtracker

I’m ready to fire up my motor soon, and i put a fitting for a vac gauge in the rear of the indy valley plate on top. Since it’s pulling vacuum, i don’t believe a baffle is needed since oil and vapor is being drawn the opposite way.

How is oil and vapor being drawn the other way? Especially under acceleration work shruggy

I have my vacuum gauge connected to a fitting on the valley cover and that seems to work well.

I make fuel pump covers with a 1/8 NPT threaded port so you can install a fitting or a sensor for a vacuum gauge.

On my EFI race engine I just screwed the vacuum sensor right into the fuel pump blockoff for dyno testing. For a race car I'd probably suggest using a hose so the sensor isn't exposed to so much engine vibration. It is nice to have a sensor hooked up to a datalogger rather than watching a vacuum gauge but a hose to a vacuum gauge will work if you don't have a data logger.

Where do you have the pump inlet hose hooked up to? If it is in a valve cover don't hook the gauge port up to the same cover, it will not give you an accurate reading but will tell you how much vacuum that valve cover has smile Also if this is a racepak or other data logger DO NOT put the sensor directly on the engine. They do not like the vibration at all. AS for me we generally put it in the opposite valve cover from the pump inlet.

Thanks everyone for the reply. My block does not have a provision for a manual fuel pump and the valley tray is thin aluminum. So opposite valve cover it will be. Thanks for the positive direction. Birdtracker

that is very sanitary. First time vac pump user. Plan on using all AN fittings. Birdtracker

We just use pushlock air line fittings. It weighs less and easy to connect and disconnect for maintenance

Here is a pic of mine. Drivers side valve cover in the oil fill cap.

Cab, what i meant was that, as far as i can figure, ia baffle is not really needed since the crankcase is under vacuum and being pulled into the pump. So oil won’t be pushed up the fitting, like if the crankcase was under pressure and vents to any openings. This is what i surmised, but correct me if i’m wrong on my thinking, please.

I found out the hard way that not using a baffle under the vacuum fitting on my new motor caused a lot more oil being sucked into the tank on every run, it would fill the tank up in less than 6 runs pukescope
I swap the old valve covers onto the new motor and cure that problem up
Using the baffle under the fitting resulted in almost pure moisture with in the tank and very little oil up
I think the oil droplets being slung off of the rocker arms are being forced into the fitting and up the hose under suction and not being given a chance to drop back into the heads, the baffle stops that twocents

I just tig welded an 1/8 inch pipe fitting on the top rear corner on my indy valve covers and run a plastic oil pressure line to my guage. Doesnt have to be anything extravagant. Just has to work.

Drilled and tapped 1/8"pipe the back of the valley cover. Then used1/4"push lock. Out of sight.

I should have clarified, but i am talking about the fitting that leads only to the vacuum gauge to monitor crankcase vacuum. Not the fitting and baffle to leads to the pump itself. They are in 2 diff locations. The pump hose fitting has a bafgle and is mounted in front of valve cover.

Btw, is there a better position for the baffle opening in that valve cover that you found is best? Right now, i have my opening pointing towards the header side. With the angle of the valve covers mounted on the heads, it is slanted downward away from the fitting opening. But, not sure if facing forward or center of engine is better? Thx

I drilled a hole in the top rear of the drivers side V.C. for the gauge to read from up
