Guys,
I often wondered if the Missile was sometimes used as a blocker? The Missile was a Chrysler test vehicle - could you hear the stink if it beat Jenkins, Nicholson, ect...in the final. A Chrysler owned car...I don't think the Missile scored it's first major win until 72. Don't get me wrong, the Missiles are some of my favorite all-time cars but when Carlton & Sox lined up it seemed that Ronnie always won (up to 72, but by then the weight breaks were upon them). Not always by having the faster car though - the Missile would set low ET run extremly quick in eliminations and something would go wrong in the final??? (ex. clutch eye bolt, handicap still dialed in the christmas tree from the previous S/S run, ect...
Just a thought

Another guy that doesn't get much credit is Paul Frost - Billy Stepp's crew chief. In 71 Stepp's cars started going fast. I seem to remember reading that Tom Hoover called Frost one of the top three Hemi engine builders in the country at the time. That's quite a compliment coming from Mr Hoover. I am pretty sure that Paul pioneered the P/S dry sump oiling system. I know that Jenkins was NOT the first although he is often credited with it, the Stepp cars also did some of the initial Lenco testing in a P/S. I love the story of Indy 71 - Stewart McDade driving for Stepp ran quicker that S&M in qualifying - so Buddy protested the car - while the car was in teardown all day S&M got their Cuda faster than Stepp. so as was the rule Step got the protest money - he promptly threw it back at Buddy saying something like " I don't need your money"! Well both cars ended up in the final - McDade outran Sox but Ronnie beat him at the tree. Stepp's cars often were low qualifiers or #2 but often went out with breakage. I don't think they ever won a major event but Paul was an innovator - unfortunately sometimes at the cost of consistancy.

It is hard for me to believe that the Missile was used as a blocker. The rivalry between those groups was pretty intense. Remember that Carlton drove for S&M at one time - Friendship is one thing but winning is another --

I never knew Paul Frost personally, but he was a true innovator - now Billy Stepp was a unique character though -- they did seem to have bad luck at times --

Stewart,
You are right. Many a mechanic goes unnoticed and in many cases thwarts off credit where credit is due. It's been much the same in my short stint of 24 years in aviation maintenance and this anonymous poem called the "Forgotten Mechanic" says it best. But this could so easily apply to Drag Racing and the mechanics who have brought the quality and performance of the cars to where they are today...

Remembering the Forgotten Mechanic.

Through the history of world aviation many names have come to the fore.

Great deeds of the past in our memory will last, as they're joined by more and more.

When man first started his labor in his quest to conquer the sky he was designer, mechanic and pilot, and he built a machine that would fly.

But somehow the order got twisted, and then in the public's eye the only man that could be seen was the man who knew how to fly.

He was everyone's hero, he was brave, he was bold, he was grand, as he stood by his battered old biplane with his goggles and helmet in hand.

To be sure, these pilots all earned it, to fly you have to have guts.

And they blazed their names in the hall of fame on wings with bailing wire struts.

But for each of the flying heroes there were thousands of little known, and these were the men who worked on the planes but kept their feet on the ground.

We all know the name of Lindbergh, and we've read of his flight to fame.

But think if you can, of his maintenance man, can you remember his name? And think of our wartime heroes, Gabreski, Jabara, and Scott.

Can you tell me the names of their crew chiefs? A thousand to one you cannot.

Now pilots are highly trained people, and wings are not easily won.

But without the work of the maintenance man our pilots would march with a gun.

So when you see mighty jet aircraft as they mark their way through the air, the grease stained man with the wrench in his hand is the man who put them there.

You guys are stuck in the 70's. History started before then. Who was the mechanic's for the Ramchargers in the early years? Let's go back where history was made, like 63 and 64....De
