'74 360 block here...checked the hole diameter and it looks to be around .300-.310, however several on-line sources reference a 0.275" diameter pin (Mancini Racing), and yet there is the following Mr. Gasket part which is 0.310".

Heck, this Pioneer Automotive set is a steal at $11 for 25 pcs!

So what the heck is the right/correct dimension?

I've never seen a wobbly dowel pin ever, so that 0.275" diameter seems not right.

May I ask, how did you measure the hole?

Vernier caliper...I got between .300-.310 only because the dowel pin hole in the head is the .310" while the block is .300".

Since I figure it's hard to expect the block to expand by 0.010" to make the larger diameter dowel pin fit, I better look at something around that .300" size, but the only thing I find in the right length is the .275" stuff.

I've always had trouble measuring small holes with a caliper. I've resorted to using drill bits as an el-cheapo plug gauge.

iagree Pretty obvious that the nominal dimension is .3125" (5/16").

I have a couple of the kits Mopar sells to finish out a new bare block. Freeze plugs, distributor bushing etc. The have two sets of dowel pins in them one set around .310 and some others closer to .275. Not sure where the small ones go.

That is kind of what I was thinking.

That is kind of what I thought but isn't that a big block deal?

My R3 block has no provision for them.

I don't remember if a small block has them or not. Slants do.

I am currently preping a never used R3 block. I had a lot of trouble getting the dowel pins in the driver's side deck. Even using a brass hammer I mushroomed the top of one.

On the passenger side i placed the dowels in the -1 freezer for a couple days and they went in much better.

Thanks for the responses you guys.

I ordered a couple of different part numbers, just a QTY of 1 or 2, so not a big spend.

Once I get them here, will measure and try them out, and post the results, FYI if anything.
