82-D350 NP435--- I have it torn down cleaned/oiled and cant seem to figure out how you install the spline spring clips on the main shaft and the sliding 1-2 gear.

only video I can find that even mentions it said to remember which way and how they go in the gear. my 75 Chilton truck books shows them as spline springs and said to install them but not how to do it or any reference to which way they go. did say install them if they were USED in the trans.

so I take it some did not use them..

I remember seeing them but due to the learning curve on disassembly I did not remember which way the were in there and I broke both hammering on them....so I found some used small parts that has a set.. got them on the way along with a bearing/seal/gasket rebuild kit.

so can anyone school me on what they do and why I need them (ok to leave them out?) and most of all HOW they are installed correctly.

TIA

Thanks. yes it does. they are right there with the first speed gear going on the main shaft.

does the book reference HOW you install them with the gear?

looking at the splines on the main shaft they all look the same. on the gear it does have 2 of the splines notch/which mocking it up seem to be the ones with clearance for the slide springs.

with gear on the shaft I can slide the flat pieces in the splines at the notched area so I am thinking this is the way they go on with the gear. mine are broke but...the 90* ends on the flat spring capture it in place so it only comes out with the R&R of the gear/main shaft.

I had them in the bottom of spline and not side of spline so the hammer did not work. I did learn what NOT to do installing them.

something else I notice is in my book and in your book it does not show the 3rd roller bearing in the short tail housing.

mine is out of a 82 d350 if that matters?

and my book makes a reference to install the flat springs IF USED. so some have and some do not?

It doesn't specifically say how to install them. They are most likely there to prevent what they call neutral gear rattle.

what I thought very vague. so results will vary. yes the gear does have some slack in the splines without them in. the gear has 2 of the splines wider than the rest, mainshaft all the same size

once I got them in hand this morning I was able to get them in there on the side of the spline in the notched area of the gear.

thanks for the help and reference pic.
