i have a 2000 dodge ram 4X4 360 auto. needs a fuel pump.
ordered from rock auto along with a lock ring just in case i need it. after a closer inspection online it looks like it's made of plastic, along with the tank, and just screws on. i have never installed one on this type truck yet so i don't know how it's done. should be a easy job the tank has new straps installed, 2 months ago when i bought the truck.
do i need the special tool or will a big channel locks work? or another install method. yes i have fuel line disconnect tools.

Its simple.. start to drop the tank leaving the front strap loose so you can get to the plug... pull the other strap
and drop the tank.. when on the floor you can use a spanner wrench or tap the lock ring with a hammer and
large screw driver... same thing when installing

THANK YOU for the reply.
i have never worked on a 2nd gen ram gas tank other than replacing the straps.
when viewing the images of the lock ring online i see it's a different design than a regular gas tank i am used to. it looks to be made of plastic and it threads onto a neck built into the tank instead of the regular friction ring that gets pounded into the retaining ring.
it should be a easy job, especially after i have already replaced the straps. i have to remember to let the tank get almost empty, 36 gallon, before i start the job. maybe i should also pick up a couple of hose clamps for the filler neck and vent line. the truck is a RUSTY beater and getting those off without damaging them might be difficult.

I gently tapped the ring loose with a dead blow hammer and round wood dowel.

I prefer tilting up the cargo box of the pickup to a 45 degree angle instead of dropping the tank.
Loosen half the bolts, remove the others, watch that you do not pinch the electrical wires at the back near the license plate. If alone, jack up the cargo box and use jack stands and timbers to safely hold it. I had to jack mine up alone in the 40 mph gusts of tropical storm Ernesto.

What you need to pay special attention to is the “roll over valve.”
The roll over valve is hard to remove without breaking,
and the replacement tank generally does not give you a new one.
Many parts stores will have to special order one if you break your original.

I took a Dremel tool and slowly and carefully cut away the old tank parts from the roll over valve to leave it undamaged for re-use.

Do not let a squirrel or rodent gnaw a hole in the fuel line attachment Elbow to the pump assembly.
Do not ask me how I know this.

Channel Locks will not be big enough. A strap wrench usually works as an alternative to hammering. I prefer to pull the box, rather than drop the tank. An engine hoist and some lumber is all it takes...
