I have been buying and selling at swap meets for about 40 years now and I have often wondered if I have ever received any "funny-money" for a transaction. You guys ever wonder about the hundreds of dollars you receive at swap meets?

with the new bills i don't bother to check them. any older bill over a $20 i hold up to the light to see if it's legit by looking for the hidden thread identifying bill size.
been doing this for about 3 years now.

there was a bunch of funny money being passed around at the Mopar Nat's in Columbus a few years ago

never heard about that at the Nats.
But did hear about it at Carlisle some time ago,
Luckily I never got any. But I sure could see how easy it could happen

Quit calling our money "funny". Just 'cause its made of plastic and has colours other than green doesn't make it funny !!!

I have often thought about this. Yea you sell a part for a few hundred and they guy whips out $100's. It goes through my mind. I usually hold them up and check the little strip to make sure it says 100 on it. I think we would be surprised if we knew how much "funny money" we handled. Especially $20's. Who all checks their $20's? If I recall correctly, a few years back someone took $1 bills and recopied them as 20's. It was reported there were a few passed in my area.

Aboout two years ago a group of people passed like 12 or 15 fake $100's a a local amusement park. That hit the news!

It would be easy to do at Carlisle! That would suck.

For about five bucks you can get a checking pen. I sold a truck recently for cash to an out-of-town buyer who did a fly-in drive home. I made sure that I had all of his contact info, Google his home address, etc before he showed up.. I bought the pen. I didn't want to check the money right in front of him, but as soon as he left I did. I figured if there was counterfeit the cops could still catch up with him while he was on his way home.

I check all large bills with the pen at the swap meet.
You never know when one will slip in to the mix

I just laugh when I see a beaver on it Beaver always makes me grin

Sometimes I end up spending most of the money I make at the swap meet just to buy new junk to replace the junk I just sold

Now to ON THE TOPIC ... not a fan of the network but I am a fan of the program AMERICAN GREED and they had a program about what the Secret Service said was the most talented funny money producer ever encountered.

Quite a few years ago I sold a Honda Civic we had, I didn't want him coming to my house so i met him in a local shopping center parking lot. Theres an Applebees there, the guy came with cash ( $100 bills ) I was worried about counterfeit so I went in and asked the bartender to check then, he graciously did and they were good, perhaps they are trained or If remember correctly they had a machine to check the bills. I believe people would try to pass fake bills at a swap meet especially because its mostly cash transactions.
