Hello
I put together a B-1 combo and is using a stock 440 block
Just as I was going to drop the distributer in I found a crack on the front lifer bore
A machine shop told me they can fix it by putting a bar across the lifter valley and have it welded up
I have about $1.500 worth of machine work into this block
1975 440 block half fill, billet main caps , cam is 800/284 at @50
Seems this is a lot of side load and it cracked across the bore
Anyone do anything like this to a stock block
1.39 9.85 - 137 mph

Me thinks your fooling with faith starting with a bad block, I wouldn't do that Do you want to have this one fail at or above 100 MPH with you in the car Time to think about a new race block, aluminum or cast iron

Nobody wants to throw away $1,500 but you have a lot more than that in the engine. And if it blows it's going to take out a lot of good parts. Do what you don't want to do. Throw that POS away and find another block. My 2 cents.

Make a coffee table out of it or use it for mock up. B1's are too much power for a stock block. This. Save your money and get an aftermarket block. Its GOING to break again. The engine is telling you its too much strain.

I've had 3 RB blocks that had cracks in the main webbing from racing them, luckily none of them hurt me when they fialed If you absolutely wanted to fix and use that block on another less powerful combination you could have the crack ground out and welded and then bush the lifters bores to make the block usable agian Be safe, don't take chances

Ari can you post a picture of the damage?
I like the idea of repairing it and using it, but more for a street/fun car kind of a build with regular port heads.... Not for anything with B1s.

Thank you for the reply,s everyone
I'm afraid if I do an other block will this be a problem again
The motor hasn't started yet
Big cam duration put alot of stress on it
This is #1 cylinder on the exhaust bore there is no support there
It's next to the oilpump gear drive
Can't post a pic on here but it you like on Facebook look up Ari Kostopoulos
Maybe some one can post it here
Can't afford a after market block maybe best to sell the B-1s
Just want to see if anyone else has this problem
Thank you 😊

Are you sure that is a crack? Looks more like a casting flaw.??? Mine has several places that look like that. Hasn't been a problem yet.

Ari Sorry to hear about this, man! What is the difference in spring pressure from this cam/springs to the other motor you ran with Indy heads? That was a big cam with high pressures also, right? Just trying to reason if the block was weak in that area or spring pressure is just too high for stock lifter bores.

Anyone do anything like this to a stock block Also interested in hearing how much spring pressure you are running. The exhaust lifter really shouldn't have much side load on it I think?
