My daughter is just graduating as a PA. Her PA friend (who I introduced my daughter to, was the daughter of a Mopar friend) went to NY help (though they are paying her $13,000/wk for 3 weeks and free 1st class hotel room & board so that's a pretty strong motivation). After being there for a week she got corona. She's 28, healthy, strong willed, married, 3 young ones (under 5) at home. Seems to me as an old person foolish. $39,000 is a bunch of money but not if you lose your life.

Here's a recent update. Interesting. Hope she gets over it. Not sure how/if she's compensated now that shes sick and how long they will "put her up". A month? Her gig was only for 3 weeks. Will it be on her dime in a few days cause she's been there 18 days according to this last text.

Sorry, I hope this has good ending.

"$39,000 is a bunch of money but not if you lose your life."

From what I can observe, most have a much lower price point for exercising their "rights" to get sick, since they are young, healthy, its only just another case of the "flu", and it only effects old people.

25 with 3 kids tells me she's a little impulsive and not thinking things through in general.

Best of luck to her.

Some people have an even cheaper price to give up their rights.

Hope she heals up.

I have to say, the timeline of your story and hers don't match very well.

Yeesh, hopefully she is able to fully recover. What she did is signed up for infantry during a war, can be considered brave...or dumb, depending on how you perceive it. My wife has worked as an RN for quite some time now and up until COVID she picked up 2-4 shifts per month at the local hospital. As soon as this came around, that halted completely. The money is -not- worth the risk, we have two kids to consider as well...

I believe her situation of care when dealing with the virus will be non-existant. The hospitals have been seeing medical workers as sacrificial and I would be very surprised if they lift a finger to render any additional support for her situation.

Wow, that is sad news but my guess she is going to recover. I don't know about you, but I would feel pretty proud of her. I mean money is money, but still to go there and risk stuff to help strangers, that says a lot about her character.

Well hopefully that's not the case... they wanted the help, so they should take care of them

The disingenuous part is if she REALLY wanted to help she could have stayed in Detroit cause there's a pandemic here. But it would only be for a regular (but very good) paycheck.

Timeline.... I know she went for 3 weeks I'm guessing was about 2-3 weeks ago. My daughter mentioned something about her staying (just looked, last Wed) for another 3 weeks (the pay's good, right?) Within the past week (just checked, this past Sat) she got 'rona. Not sure what the heck she means by "being out of quarantine in 5 days"???

Guys with all due respect, the OP's daughter is not out of the woods yet, I would think holding back on the criticism, deserved or not, might be the classy thing to while she recovers.

It's not my daughter. It's my daughters friend. She's also 28 not 25 (my mistake) but still "busy" with 3 little ones and such a risky/demanding a career.

MY daughter is 27, no kids, engaged, starts working here in the Detroit area taking very similar risks for only $60/hr on June 1st.

I stand corrected, still might be best if we let this play out before we pile on.

In 1972 my wife graduated nursing school and got her first job as a RN at a VA hospital. 42 years later she wound up in Sloan Memorial hospital in NYC a patient herself. Its going on eleven years now and the nurses are nothing. short of terrific. One nurse however I wont ever forget.... During one of her several surgeries she was having trouble urinating. My wife can handle pain but this pain was taking hold her fast and getting worse. She started to get in a panic which made me get. in a panic. I ran into the hall looking for help instead of hitting the call button. The first person I ran into was this guy. He was built like a athlete, maybe six two. He saw how upset I was and even though my wife wasn't his patient he came into the room, saw the problem, called for urinary cat.
He asked me to step out of the room and he did what he was trained to do. My wife was now out of pain and shortly afterwards fell asleep. I was a wreck from the entire week, exhausted and upset. As I left to go home, walking down the hall I ran into this RN. I started talking to him and I broke down, I just couldn't hold it in anymore seeing her so sick. This guy put his arm around my shoulder and told me my wife would be ok and he promised to check in on her during the night even though she wasn't his patient.
Thats what these people do, they care for us and our loved ones. They give us comfort and hope. Now today we can't pay them enough money to take care of people with COVID-19.
I had this thought that after 9-11 which I saw up close, my city would get a pass with this crisis but I was wrong, were getting hit hard. The people that work in theses hospitals not just here but all through America deserve all our praise and gratitude.
God Bless this young lady who is the subject of this post, Bless her loved ones and I wish her Gods will for a speedy recovery

A brother of a friend of mine got it. For the first few days he said it felt like having a really bad flu, then it cleared up and he was feeling perfectly normal again but it took over 2 weeks after that before he tested negative. He's mid 50s.

That money sounds great but there's no way I'd put myself in that sort of risk purposely going to NYC when there's so many uknowns about this thing but kudos to her for doing it, even if she might not make the right decisions and might have been money driven. They do need help there.

James, I'll tell you what - sounds like your daughters' friend fits the description of a "hero." During an emergency, most people will run away from it, while others are running TO it. I'd put her in that category. Her, & all the others in the medical field like her are true heroes. They sacrifice their own well being to help others.

I believe my family had this back in Feb., & I'm talking & hearing about other people I know who it sounds like they have also had it. My youngest daughter got it a week before me - woke up with a moderate fever & that was intermittent for about 3 days, had the dry cough, sore all over, & just generally feeling BAD. Then she started feeling better. I was next & I got hit the hardest - I was on a business trip for 4 days during the beginning of it too. I was feeling really bad for about 9 days: moderate fevers for 7 days, relentless headache, dry cough, trouble getting oxygen at night, so sore all over I could hardly sleep at night, loss of taste for about 5 days, my left eyeball was hurting, but I did not get pink eye - it hurt like someone smacked me in the eye, dizzy, vision was bad, sore neck & headache - I felt a little like I had meningitis (I had a bout with viral meningitis back in 1979), slightly sore throat & ears, and my lungs hurt - they felt strange like I knew something unusual was going on inside of them, but they were not loading-up with junk - they felt clear. The weird lung feeling was with me for a good 7 weeks or so - they finally feel good now. My other daughter & wife had their 'versions' of this after I was feeling better. My wife felt kind of crappy for a day, then felt fine except for a really bad dry cough & she lost her voice for 3 days. Her cough plagued her for about a month, then generally subsided.

Now my co-worker I believe got this back in mid-January - he's from California. His only symptoms were a terrible dry cough that lasted a good 10 weeks, plus he lost his voice for a solid month. This Corona deal hits everybody a little differently from what I can surmise. Anyway, getting it is certainly NOT a death sentence, but it is a bit nasty & certainly has some strange symptoms!

Hey... while the vast majority ov us are in no danger... this thing is not to be underestimated. I have a friend, ex-fighter, now lifter, and this guy's about as tough as they [censored] get. He and his (not so tough) wife were self-quarantining very early on, because she has immune-system issues. Well, they both got it somehow. She had a couple days ov so-so coughing... then was fine. He... was laid clean out... for 4 full days. Could barely breathe, eat, move... you name it. They got through it, but wow. It NUKED this guy. He's 36 and in incredible health.

The girl i train knows a 30yr old woman from NJ (i think) who just died. Healthy, happy, 30 year old girl, a very strong competitive powerlifter. Her whole family caught it, her dad died, then so did she. Granted, she was 5'4" 300lbs... but still.

The fearmachine is WAY off the rez on this one... but personal accountability and common sense still go a long way.

i agree with this disease isn't to be messed with.

when i grew up their was a much younger neighbor girl who became good friends with my much younger sister. i really don't know this person much.
she married into $$$. her youngest daughter, in her early 30's, was traveling Europe when this mess was just starting. her last stop was Italy. her daughter brought unknowingly brought it back with her when she returned.
the mother ( my old neighbor), father, 3 sisters, 2 brothers, 4 aunts, 5 uncles, and about 10 friends all contacted this disease just from 1 person at a party celebrating her return. the infected person showed no symptoms during the party. that's just direct infection to close people, i don't know if their friends spread it to other people. to the best of my knowledge, 2 people have died from it. the mom, dad younger sister and several older relatives came really close to dying. they all were hospitalized and had to be on ventilators.

perception is 90% of reality

iagree
If he hadn't mentioned the compensation would we have had all the negative comments ???. No one knows why she went, just that she did. Many medical, LEO's and first responders put their lives on the line every day for US. We need to support them in any way possible, not criticize. If you want to do that start, by looking in the mirror twocents

Its called hazard pay and is optional, no rights given up. They give it in the military too. She should be thanked for helping her fellow citizen, something many dont think about much.
