I thought that I'd post some broken connecting rod carnage pics.

This is the 5.7 Hemi from the 2004 Durango that I picked up with a bad engine.

The story was the guy went out to start it on a day that we had 10+ inches of rain, fight on start up it started knocking.
Apparently it's a common problem on that era Durango with a Hemi once they get over 100k miles on them the water runs down off the cowl onto the engine and the intake o-rings can let water seep past.

The amazing part was that other than sometime having an initial knocking noise on start up, it ram smooth and quiet after that. realcrazy

I finally started swapping over the Durango specific parts (oil pan, etc) onto the replacement engine so I took some carnage pics.

It's crazy that the number 6 cylinder piston it turned 90 degrees from where it should be in the bore.

Powder forged rods don't like hydraulic lock up. shock

Old style forged rods usually just bend or stop the engine from turning over, powder forged one just break.

We have started pushing all of our customers with those to do intake gaskets every 100,000 as a simple preventative maintnance. I have seen a ton of those and the story about starting it after rain is pretty much universal and the only way water gets in the cylinders is through flattened intake gaskets.

Pop a new piston and rod in and JB weld the hole!

Good to go!

Considering what it took to get the engine out, I'll just finish putting in the replacement engine. whistling

Seriously mag the block if nothing else wrong.
That hole is an easy fix, if you need the block.

Do the ram pick-ups have this problem also? I own an 05 Daytona and if it should have the intake gaskets replaced,I'll do them.Thanks.

I think that it's mainly a Durango issue since how the water drains off the cowl is one of the reason it happens.
Half the engine is under the cowl on a Durango.

But as Dave has said,

I think that the intake gaskets/seals should be replaced every so often to avoid the possibility of it happening.
IMO They flatten out and quit sealing properly with time.

On a side note, I got the replacement engine in the Durango fired up last week and it's licensed and being driven now.

??? ... so there’s a opening in the intake stream ENUFF to allow water inside the engine but there’s no HUGE VACUUM LEAK SOUND or negative running issues??

You have a small vacuum leak, but the computer compensates by adding more gas to the fuel injection to help smooth it out.

It actually does run a little worse/rougher but most people would never notice it.

It is an air leak, the throttle body is a computer controlled air leak, if the idle speed goes up due to the air leak the confuser simply closes the throttle a little more to maintain the same idle as if there was no vacuum leak. The fuel trim is adjusted by the computer also by watching the O2 sensors so there may be no noticable ill effect from the vacuum leak unlike a carb that will not add fuel when the air bypasses the throttle and a carb also has no way of turning down the idle speed with an air leak so stuff really gets out of wax with it. Add in things like secondary air doors that rely on the proper vacuum to work properly and a carb is a mess with an air leak while you may not notice anything with an EFI engine leaking vacuum.

yup, and not just modern cars, my Classic FAST EFI equipped 383 totally hid a substantial intake leak for quite awhile- the idle air control motor compensated. Eventually though it got to the end of it's range and the inability to idle down after warm up is what clued me in.
