Are there any high flow electric fans out there that do not require electronics to run. Not interested in the Mercedes fan for this reason. Suitable fans should be able to be modified to fit typical oem brass or aftermarket aluminum radiators in our Mopars and clear typical water pumps. No pusher fans. No PWM boxes unless they are readily available anywhere. I've seen the HHR and Ford fans. Do they flow enough for street duty or are they best used by race cars? Anything else out there?

Thanks

In theory, there is no difference between theory and practice. In practice, there is.

ANY fan will work. For compactness the Dodge Neon fans can't be beat and you can get them at Pick and Pull for next to nothing.

I'm running a wimpy fan of unknown origin (rumor it came out of a Dodge Omni), direct wired to a 10 amp toggle switch and it cools my 5600 pound 4x4 360 no problem. It turns slow because of the switch but it's not an issue. I've even pulled a trailer with it and still never had a problem.

Could be where you live too. 120 in the dessert is a tad different than Fargo ND.

Ford Contour fans are keeping my Dart's big-cam 451 cool at least in 86F temps. They cycle on and off about every 30 secs while idling at a standstill for prolonged periods.
I'm using a swapmeet copper-brass radiator, not sure what it came out of, just narrow enough to fit in there.
(If it's much hotter than that I won't be driving the Dart anyway, with no a/c!)

I've used SPAL fans on a few custom deals. Nice, quality. And to my knowledge still made in Italy. Not China junk.

If the results don't match the theory, change the theory.

My brother has a twin fan unit out of a supercharged Pontiac Bonneville and it moves a lot of air. It's in a GM car with a crossflow radiator so it may be the wrong shape to fit a Mopar radiator.

Get the biggest one that covers as much of the radiator as you can..

I have the Derale dual fans & their PWM, works great, 512ci,Cold A/C, southeast Texas heat, 180ish all day long, had to grind a spot on each outer fan plastic holder to clear the water pump pulley

the Mercedes fan has a few different versions.
the factory versions have one that do not require any extra electronics, but it is then only an on and off, vs a ramp up based on temp.
the thread shows pics or a description of the different ones out there.

Chevy HHR fan. I have used them on several builds with no problems. They move lots of air and you can find new ones on EBay for around sixty bucks.

I have Ford Contour fans on the 5.7L Hemi and they will cool the car in Texas Summers on low speed.

I run the fans on high speed when the a/c is on and they move a TON of air. Ensure your charging system is up to par with any of the solutions out there. I'd really consider using a PWM fan controller, if I were you. Yes, those are "electronics", but they are very effective for managing electrical loads.

I had a HHR fan with the 318, which also worked pretty well.

I run the dual fans out of a late model Challenger/Charger/300. Easy to adapt.

Good to know. So it probably will work for a bigger engine in the heat, on high speed.

iagree I am about to do just that... I did a simple installation with both fans wired in parallel for full voltage only, and a hefty 80 amp relay to turn them on and off. Does a great job keeping the 451 cool, but with my huge (for the street) cam, when the electrical load suddenly comes on, it can really pull the RPM too far down (especially if coming to a stop at the same moment).

I tried that first, but the HHR would not fit between the water pump nose and the radiator in my A-body. And it can't be run as a pusher by reversing the motor, because the blades are scooped the wrong way. Other than the enormous Mercedes fan, the Contour pair seems to be a good solution all around. twocents

This is where I would take advantage of a PWM fan controller. Wire the PWM controller to the high speed windings on the fan and let it manage temp between 0% and 100% high speed, you won't have a problem. Ever.

i'm doing the same fan setup on my charger now, although i don't have any pics. my fan is for a 2016 model year with the 6.1 [i think ? the bigger one below the hellcat version] hemi.
i am also upgrading my alternator to a 95 amp denso, and will be running my fans through a relay system at the very least, although i'm also considering a PMW controller.

I also run the ford contour fans. I use a flex-a-lite controller to run them. Soft start up and they run faster or slower depending on what the car wants.
I also have a switch hooked up that will run them on high if i need to.

That's the answer! After my junkyard fans centrifically exploded after a 145 MPH pass I bought a 16 inch spal pusher fan that cools my 545 inch blown hemi. 185* when it's over 90*.Back at the starting line it's down to 160*.
The spal fan was $135 and their mounting system is easy peasy. up
