I really dislike spending money on Harbor Freight tools but I only need to use this once, hopefully.

I have a couple power steering pumps, Both are TWR pumps. One has the hex shaft and the one in my picture attached has the solid shaft.

Is this tool from harbor freight the correct style to get this job done on both? To press it off and back on again , maybe I can rent a better one at AZ.

There are several iterations out there but that looks like the correct one. I took mine to a local small independent shop and he pulled it for $5. I'd rather have the tool, but they the time the cost, shipping, or gas is factored in, I'm currently ahead in the game. You might be able to "rent" one for free from a parts store if they have one.

That HF puller might get the pulley off but, without a threaded shaft, it won't install it. Only way to install the pulley is with the pump disassembled.

I use my alternator pulley puller to remove the P/S pump pulley.

Just got done resealing this TRW pump.

Sounds like a need a press too. Does anyone know if the hex shaft has any internal threads? I don’t have that pump off yet to look.

I use a tool like the HF one for alternator pulley also. So it is a good investment if you do some rebuilds of alternator and PS pump. Believe the Federal is the only one you can put the pulley back on with the HF tool since that shaft is threaded. Have not done a Saginaw recently so not sure about them.

The harbor freight puller broke the first time I used it. They gave me another. It trashed my pulley though.

Probably the threaded rod broke. Takes a good force to remove/install the federal pulleys.
Why best to NOT buy that junk stuff.

Puller I have is Mac Tools PP40. Installer is a Snap-On CJ113B3. It requires a threaded shaft.

I'd buy used US made good stuff on ebay before fooling around with the China junk.

The loaned stuff at the auto parts is the same Chinese junk the Horror Freight sells. It usually breaks or ruins the pulley before you get it off. Pinching the jaws of the puller together in a vice when it is installed to remove the pulley helps prevent it from jumping out of the groove. Or you can use the cup style.

I see some of this stuff on ebay now. Not cheap, but not new price. Buy it, use it, put it back on ebay if you don't want to keep it.

If the results don't match the theory, change the theory.

Mine is a snap-on, it still needs a squeeze in a vice or with c-clamp on the tough ones. A few drops of 85w-140 gear lube on the threads and where the tip rotates helps a bunch. I actually rented a front suspension set at advance, pulled 5 pitman arms, stripped 3 k-frames, and got all the ball joints and drag links apart with just gear oil on the threads, a little heat, and a light hammer tap, no damage to parts, was impressed with that puller set to be honest. I broke my snap-on pulling the gold pulley off of a new, not reman carquest alternator, toughest pulley I have ever seen. So all pullers will break.

The two halves of the HF puller fixture were made uneven and it pulled the pulley at a angle and bent the pulley and cracked the fixture before i noticed it. Junk IMO.

That is why I like the HF style versus the C clamp style puller. I have not had any trouble getting any pulley off and some of them have been sitting outside for decades. If HF is defective, then a better manufacture, but there are two side sides on those halves and it does have to be put on the pulley correctly.

I've used the harbor freight tool many times. Worked fine. It reinstalls them fine for those with a threaded shaft as well.

Yea, it was on the correct side. The metal halve was made lopsided on the one half and didn`t notice it until too late. One question, ( Not trying to high jack the post) but can a key slot Saginaw pump be used instead of a press on pulley type pump?Do they interchange as far as the brackets and pulleys on a early to mid 70`s small block? I would prefer to use a key slot style.

Bracket and hose fittings can be different. Pulley size and offset also. Have to find right set up.

Perfect! Now I won’t need a press for my one pump. Thank you!

Follow up to my original post.

I just got done resealing two TRW pumps. The “Small” TRW pump is the pump with the plain shaft, no hole, no hex. The Edelmann kit part number is 7897. The “Large” TRW pump with the hex shaft ( Does Not have internal threads to reinstall pulley) uses Edelmann kit number 7898. You can buy the kits from Rock Auto or Amazon.

Note...don’t buy the lisle tool part number 39000, it won’t fit the pulley hub to remove the pulley. I ended up buying an OTC tool. Worked great.

You do need a press to get each of these pulleys back on.

Hope it helps....
