We are redoing our one room and wife wants to put bookshelves on the outer ends of the fireplace and mount the tv to the fireplace. She originally wanted a mantel, but I know she would overload it with junk. I want to install a tv mount and brackets for a soundbar under it. The consoles and such can stay to one side or the other and run cables to it. I also want the tv to be able to pull out a bit to get to the back of the tv. I am looking at monoprice for the mounts. Would I drill holes into the brick or mortar? Not sure if they will line up centered on brick for top and bottom, one in brick and one in mortar, or how it will line up. Any advice is greatly appreciated. I usually only mess with either mounting to studs or to drywall with some sort of anchor, never messed with brick at all.

We do not use the fireplace at all. It's pretty much sealed off. The bricks are not entirely flat, so not sure how that will play into the mounting process. It's also going to be painted, so if we need to caulk a hold to hide it later, that's an easy fix.

Screw a board to the fire place for a flat surface( I use expanding type of anchors then buy the mount...
they make the type your looking for... paint as needed

I've done this in brick, block, masonry facings, concrete, about everything imaginable. What I've found to be the best is to use a rotary hammer drill to drill a hole. Then set a stud in the hole using expoy. Then bolt your bracket, fastener, whatever to the stud(s). Some people claim that an expansion anchor or a drop in wedge anchor is best but I've had cases where that cracked the brick/block/etc. The epoxy set stud gives you the support without the stress.

Here are two mounts I was looking at and a soundbar bracket. Have a 50" Insignia tv. Total weight of tv and soundbar is roughly 39-40 lbs.

https://www.monoprice.com/product?p_id=8588 (leaning towards this one)

Any links to products available at Lowe's or Home Depot would be greatly appreciated as well as tips on how to install them. I don't have the mount yet, so not sure how large the holes are to mount a stud to the fireplace and bolt to that. I was leaning towards the stud route as I like to overkill to make sure the mounts hold. If I get long enough studs in, I can sandwich a thin board in between the mount and bricks. Just throwing ideas around since nobody around is allowed to mix paint right now. Researching before I get into a mess.

I like the epoxy and stud idea as well...

I've been using tapcons in cinder block walls with very good success. Not real sure how well they would work in brick... work

I use a Dewalt 18V drill that has a light hammerdrill action to it. Then just screw in the Tapcon with a 5/16" bit tip in a 18v impact gun.

I've had a couple be a little loose and you can pack slivers of wood in the hole and tighten everything up.

Just did this on brick 5 weeks ago for sister-inlaw. A 60 inch flat screen. Drilled 6 ea 7/16's holes using hammer drill. Cleaned the 6 holes of all dust. Filled each hole with JB Weld and inserted the 3/8's studs and let set up for 24 hours. Used short 'Tooth Picks' to keep the studs centered in the JB Weld.

Lowes/HomeDepot has nylon door shims. So I fitted the SANUS mount loose and cut some door shim stock to level the surface, drilled a 3/8 hole in the shim stock and bolted the mound down solid. Hung the TV and fab'ed a sound bar mount under the TV.

Costco SANUS mount I used

I’m guessing the 6 holes were for the tv mount? Did you use regular 2 part JB Weld? How far in did the studs go and how far out were they? What did you use for studs? Did you place the shims under the entire bracket, near the mounting homes, or just where there were gaps? Sounds like it was just mounting points to get it so there wasn’t a gap between the bracket and brick. Sorry for all the questions, but trying to get it figured out so I don’t really screw it up. Plus the stay at home order has limited areas in Lowe’s I can get to. Want to paint it, but need to get paint tinted.

I know the questions weren't directed at me but here is my take.

I like this stuff https://www.toolauthority.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/07/dewalt-ac100plus-e-manual.pdf) How far in did the studs go and how far out were they? (Insertion depends on stud size and the protrusion depends on what kind of bracket you have. Unless there is a lot of weight I generally end up using 3/8" studs with 2 1/2 - 3" of insertion. If something is really heavy I just use more studs.) What did you use for studs? (I just cut All-Thread to length) Did you place the shims under the entire bracket, near the mounting homes, or just where there were gaps? (Typically I'll just use spacers around the studs. For something that is relatively flat I'll use flat washers, if the surface is really uneven like fieldrock, I'll use pieces of pipe as spacers) Sounds like it was just mounting points to get it so there wasn’t a gap between the bracket and brick. Bricks were 2.5 inch deep by 3 inch wide and 10 inch long.

The recommended wall to mount was 6 bolts for 70 or less pounds, 8 for up to 90 pounds. Its listed in the instructions.

Regular 2 part JB Weld. I do not like the Quick 2 stuff.

I drilled in the bricks thickness minus 1/4 inch so the holes are blind and about 2 1/4 inch deep. I measured a facing brick, backed off 1/4 inch and put tape on the drill bit for depth.

I used some Stair hand Rail bolts that are for putting a wood rail into a steel insert they are about 3.5 inch long and I ground the tips down about 1/4. The wood side is coarse wood screw thread and the other end is 3/8's NFT and about 3/4 inch sticking out of the brick. I screwed them into the wet JB Weld, not pushed in. Enough thread for the door shim, the mounting bracket, a flat washer and the nut. Like these:

https://www.homedepot.com/p/Stair-Parts-3-1-2-in-Steel-Rail-Bolt-9400K-312-HD00L/202088478

I used door shim on all 6 bolts but the thinnest on the high bolts and thicker at the shallow ones. I just cut 6 'PUCK's' and rounded them out like washers on a bench grinder.

I once watched “The View” and then mounted a brick in my TV.

IF you actually watched "The View" I would be amazed. Does anyone really watch that garbage?

Never, ever argue with an IDIOT. They will drag you to their level and then beat you with their years of experience

Thanks for the replies guys. I'll have to make sure to keep this thread in mind when we can actually get to the store to get supplies to finish the project. Wife may just want a homemade wood sign hung up there now. Ugh, wish she would make up her mind.
