391 industrial was an FE Ford. These trucks used 318 poly, 361 and 413's with some "special" characteristics. I have one or more of each engine in service. The 318 will surprise you! No ramp truck (yet) but we have two D600's, a D500 and a W500. My D800 doesn't count because it is from the later marshmallow cab era.

One interesting note is that these engines use gear driven, reverse rotation cams. I have a set of NOS gears for a reman short that we scored but no cam. From what I remember the distributor turns the right way so there must have been a special intermediate shaft too?

I learn a long time ago to never say that any of the car makers never made mistakes at the factory like installing a 500 grill in a 600 model truck on the assembly, especially on a Monday or Friday whistling shruggy

I'm not sure if that is the original Rettig Bros truck or a tribute truck confused
Same thing on the car, I've race at the same races as a car that looks a lot like that more than once a long, long time ago. I'm going to say it looks like Don Wann 1963 Plymouth M.W. car but his may have been either a Savoy two door sedan or maybe a Belvedere two door sedan ,not a Hardtop Fury confused CRS

If you want to see Don Wanns 1963 Plymouth in action it is in the movie More American Graffiti. They have it on film on the drag strip and in the pits. You can tell it’s Don(or a look alike)

They also made Belvedere hardtops.

I was racing at Fremont drag strip the weekend that movie was being filmed, I had a white 1963 Plymouth Belvedere two door sedan 415 HP A/SA. I also owned and race a original 1963 425 HP two door hardtop Belvedere as a pro class bracket car realcrazy
I and Don Wann both raced a lot at the national and division 7 races back then, we became friends and he would help me when he could and visa versus up
He was very lucky to have Dave Rettig as a major sponsor up bow
I saw him several years later win a race at Fremont with Dave 1965 SS/CA 1965 Dodge when it broke a ladder bar going into 3rd gear and he still won that round and fix it in the pits and went onto win that SS race up bow
Don was a really god driver, his Son Stevie learned well also up

What would an Olynik enclosed hauler with solid history be worth these days? Restored with a Cummins and 90's dash grafted into a 77 cab?? Asking for a friend whistling

Steve Wann bought John Deianna old 1974 D700 with a 24 ft.(I think, maybe it is a 26 or 28 ft. box) Olynik body and cut the frame off at the front of the box and grafted a similar year Ford F800 or F900 front end with a Catapillar(SP?) 300 HP V8 diesel and tranny in it to the Dodge chassis, he may have had to use the Ford rear end also to get the best rear gear ratio for that motor shruggy
Johns truck was not a crew cab Dodge like most of the trucks they gave to racers confused I think I saw only two trucks like that one at the races ever work

Which one was John's? I know he had a 64 Polara and I thought his current car was a 64 Fury. I also believe that Steve was recently racing one of John's other cars. John's cars always ran well. I have not seen John in a couple of years now.

The car he had for sale was that 63 can’t remember how he ended up with it, wanted $17.5 and would run .4 under. Max wedge heads where around $4 grand then if you could find a set, me a poor man figured it was out of my league.
Everything he has runs great, I got his number from his buddy running the 64 b car at the Dinwiddy divisional back around 03-4. Later on he had a Duster that got the E record but haven’t kept up with him or the class but the last 4 years. I’m been trying to get my Duster out but just can’t get there.

That hauler is John Dieanna (SP?) old 1974 hauler that Stevie had the front frame behind the cab cut off and had a F7000 or maybe a F8000 Ford complete front end with a CAT V8 diesel welded in and adapted for him to use the more powerful with better fuel mileage CAT diesel motor and tranny to haul with several years ago. I think that truck had either a 360 or 413 gas truck motor in it originally that got around 4 to 5 MPG best ever.
That 1970 Plymouth was his 440 6 pack car that he raced for some time before building the 1962 Plymouth M.W car he is, I think, still racing now.

I remember seeing that Rettig hauler, and cars, at a few races. Always thought that was a pretty cool operation. But, I tell ya, you go 100 miles in that old Dodge after you've become accustomed to modern stuff, and you'll feel like you've done Denver to SLC, via old US 50. smile

iagree
My first car hauling truck was a 1955 Dodge D500 with the old Chrysler Desoto industrial 254 C.I. flat head six, it road better when I hauled over 20,000 Lbs. of firewood on it than it did after I had it converted to haul my 3300 Lb.race cars . That truck had a vacuum operated two speed rear end in it which would jump out of low or high when I would let off the throttle on a hard uphill pull to downshift it or the tranny whiney I would bet money that truck with the 3300 Lb.race car on it going to the races weighed less than 12,000 lb. with extra tools in the trunk of the car twocents
It was a rough rider, thank God for the stock thick seats thumbs

That looks like the parking lot on the east side of Gary Street across from the fairgrounds that NHRA use to do sportsman tech on Wednesdays for the Winternationals work
It is closed now and used for L.A. Transit parking only, maybe gets ten to twenty cars in it at the max on any day, except when the L.A. County fair is on shruggy
