What visual clues do you look for to decide the right time to replace platinum plugs?

When you can see noticeable wear on the ground strap and the center electrode as well as damage to the center porcelain insulator scope twocents
Or when the motor starts missing due to bad plugs or wires work

If they're Bosch platinums and its not a European car, IMMEDIATELY. Otherwise the above is good.

Take care,

Another for trashing them if Bosch.Cant say how many sets I replaced at the shop because they were junk.Only ever saw 1 car that ran decent with thm .Even the super pricey ones were terrible.IIRC it seems that Bosch gave incentives for parts stores to push them.Rocky

That seems reasonable. Hard to visualize wear on the center electrode, because they are so small/odd shape to begin with and don't exactly recall, and the "little" erosion I do see, seems like a regap would suffice?

The one's I'm looking at are NGK, truck runs fine, coil on plug 90K on Plugs, 500K on truck. I was going Autolite Plat, because they were so cheap?

Measure the gap and compare it to what's recommended. I always replace spark plugs with original equipment

If you have 90,000 on the plugs I'd say you're ok to replace them

I changed the AC plugs on my 2004 Silverado last year at 100,000 miles and they looked new. Have people that have no problem putting over 200,000 on them.

I put Iridium in this 5 yrs ago, over 100 K miles and they look like the day I put them in.

I'm always amazed at these " Bosch Platinum plug threads" and the "anti-Bosch" bashers, I usually run nothing but Bosch Platinum/iridium, I have them in everything from 318's, 340 6 pack, 440, 440 6 pack even my V10 with ZERO issues, plenty of miles/years of usage.... I don't see any of the supposed issues that the same posters have that always condemn these plugs?....I actual dislike AC, Champion plugs (pure crap) NGK is a 2nd choice if Bosch are not in stock or available, as far as the OP's question of replacing Bosch Platinums? I've never experienced a bad Bosch plug(s) over the decades, I'll generally change them out around 75-90K or 3-4 yrs on a DD just for the hell of it...

Of course I replaced them after I took them out. I just stated it wasn't necessary, didn't run any better, and wouldn't worry about waiting for another 200,000 to do it the next time.

As OP, I took out the first plug, checked the gap, visually couldn't see why it needed replacing, re installed it, might return the 4 Autolights, which were cheap, and new, and don't look as nice as the original NGK's.

Dayclona if you have good luck with Bosch go play the lottery.Total junk as far as Im concerned. 30 years as a tech and only saw 1 car they ran good in.My kid aslo put a set in the 61 Polara he had because they didnt have any others.Car ran terrible hard to start etc.I puled them and use Autolites.Like a new car.Like I said i replaced tons at work in cars that ran like total crap.Could not have been all the cars when one denominator was the plugs.Rocky

Another over 30 yr exp auto tech, and I agree Bosch platinums are a way to make most cars run like crap. BTW I ALWAYS use OEM plugs in stock engines......brand and heat range.

I just replaced plugs in a 2014 Ford Expedition at 70,000 miles. Owner was complaining of a stumble at speed when he would give it a touch of gas and worse when A/C was on. He bought an inline fuel filter, which NAPA sold him (It has a non serviceable filter in the tank). After changing the plugs, he said it felt like it had more power, but thought it was in his head. Let his wife drive it and she asked what he did because it felt like it had more power. Just because the owners manual may say 100,000 miles before they need changed, it's not always the case.

In the Champion “double platinum” manufactured 2004-2012 the little platinum alloy discs will come off and cause random misfires.

NGK irridium plugs have worked well for replacements

You need a clip on ignition wire tester with a computer chip that reads out
burn time, peak kV and min kV

Oscilloscope readout would be even better

I have two KAL KEQ 2969 spark testers in order to compare two cylinders,
but I wish someone would sell an affordable tester that showed an oscilloscope like display.

My experience has not been as vast as yours, but I have used them several places, and never had an issue. In my old carb'd 2.2L engines, they were the trick to curing a random miss when idling in open loop.

Last time, only time, I ever used Bosch Platinums was in the late 80's, in my 64 300's mild 413.

One of the 8 plugs lost all it's porcelain on the engine side of the plug, caused preignition.

Not interested in spending any more money on finding out if Bosch got their act together when I have had zero problems with Champions, Autolites, AC's even Motorcraft lugs.

I've used other brand's platinum plugs without failure but I have also come to the conclusion that platinum plugs really aren't my thing either. I don't own anything that would make platinum's extended change interval attractive to me and as often as I pull and inspect my plugs I'd rather just replace them as needed.
