The ones I had were set up to apply the band when the brake was applied. Once the brake was released, the pressure in that circuit would be bled with the intention of having the band off at the 1-2 shift.
I don't know that every one he built was like that. 727 Specialist is a regular here. If anyone knows, he should. As well as knowing how to identify them.
Regardless, I would NOT use an OE drum.
