Not sure I want to tackle this job myself. Anyone in Northern NJ rebuild these? Car is a 1970 RR.

My buddy ordered a Stage 2 box from Firm Feel a few weeks ago. They are so busy, they told him they are 10 weeks out on shipping them. Another alternative is to switch over to the Borgensen box conversion. Google may lead you to another alternative if you just want to reseal your unit. I wouldn't want to rebuild mine myself.

I have used Benchworks Steering Systems in Arizona and Lares Corporation in Minnesota. Good results with both. If you are in a hurry Benchworks gets it done faster than Lares in my experience. You might be able to get a better price using one of them through a local auto parts store.

That is a good price. Advance Auto supplies Cardone units and the reviews are mixed at best. I also was told Seer & Gear in Ohio does great work for about $350. Don't know what their turn around time is. I would prefer to spend more now and have something last for years than to pull the box after 2 years with leaks. Originality is more important than having different stages of how the car feels. I'm running on repop polyglas tires so there is no point in having an over performing steering box using crap tires.

How long did it take them to rebuild your unit and send it back?

Pretty hard to beat advance for $180 with tax shipped to your door, no core, lifetime warranty. The basic reman is not going to be the quality of a steer n gear of firm feel custom build. I have had good luck with all of them, have had to adjust cross shaft a little on a cardone, but no leaks. It boils down to what you want, tighter feel, custom or borgeson, and maybe a little pump relief valve work for lower pressure. If you want just no leaks, cardone or lares. If you want your box back for sure have steer n gear or firm feel do it.

I don't know if this is a coronavirus thing but there are NO reman Cardone or Lares PS gear boxes available anywhere for a 1970 GTX. I checked the websites of Advance Auto, NAPA, Rock Auto and Parts Geek. ZIP, ZERO, NADA, all out of stock.

That is weird, availiable this morning and they even offered me 25% off. Ship to home only, low stock. Someone snagged the last one

Cardon has been out of stock for a few years. Have to send in your's for rebuild. Lares did have some last year.

I'll take that as a good omen. Hopefully I can get it rebuilt quickly. It's actually pretty tight, but leaking from both seals.

I had it back 5 or 6 days after they received it.

A few years ago most parts stores had one on the shelf and I was scraping cores by the truck load. Then all of a sudden they were out and need your's to rebuild. Now I save the cores. I've been wanting to learn how to rebuild them and maybe keep some on my shelf. I've used Firm Feel with good happiness. Last year I sent one to a shop over in Denver for rebuild. Was to be a one week turn around. Well took over 2 weeks and then blew a seal in about an hour after my customer got the car home.

If it is tight and only leaking at the input and output shaft I would just change those, flush a gallon of power steer fluid thru it with return hose off while turning the steering wheel, might be better than a rebuilt. Hardest part will be removing the pitman.

I pulled the trigger and went with Steer&Gear in Ohio. With shipping both ways and a "sport tune" which apparently a lot of muscle owners are going with plus lifetime warranty, total cost is $340 with 2-week turnaround.

Who's core is that yours or theirs??

I also used Steer and Gear in Ohio. They did a great job. This was some years ago when I switch to power steering. No problems or issues since.

They will do either. Same turnaround time since they had several cores in inventory.

I know they would do either but then there would have to be a "core charge". So I will assume you sent in a core for them to rebuilt with the $$$ you posted. Last time (recently) that I checked with them it was well over $500 because I don't have a core for them to rebuild.
