Found this 71 Dart Swinger (LH23C1Rxxxxxx) sitting in a field in SC for just over 3 years and surprisingly it held up well.

It has odd options I have not seen in previous Darts I have came across like this:

* Kelsey Hayes (manual) disc brakes
* 8-3/4 rear end (assuming 3.23 open)
* Manual pump wiper squirter
* /6 225 w/904


Why put an 8-3/4 and KH discs for a /6?


It just struck me as an odd combination.

Used to see them in the junkyards like that. I even pulled an 8 3/4 out of one.

Does it have A/C too? And /or rimblow.

There a package that has like rimblow, remote mirror, vinyl top, trim, p/s, that seems to go with a lot of 8 3/4 on 71 swingers. Maybe that plus disks.

I've seen this too so perhaps it isn't as odd as one would think.

So that was a "489" 8.75", or did they also make a small pinion version?

It is a 741 case, but do not know gear ratio or if it is a SG, yet.

I thought 741's were phased out before 71?

I know a guy who bought a slant 6 duster project car and it came with an 8.75 axle.

I know another person with a slant 6 1972 scamp and it has Kelsey hayes disc brakes. It also has factory ac and non-tinted windows, which seems odd.

Those were just the optional 72 disk brakes. Any A-body


What I have seen in 72 cars is a K-member they is half 72 and half 73.

The upper half is 68-72 style biscuit motor mounts.

The lower side was 73-76 pass thru sway bar style

This was on a 72 disk brake /6 Abody.

I assume this was a transition deal between the 72 and 73 change over. I think this happened with 69 to 70 body’s also.

This was originally a Canadian built /6 ,904,8 3/4, 3.23 sure grip,disc brakes,front sway bar,am/fm radio,factory air, and rim blow wheel.When I bought it in 1979 it had 10,287 original miles and plastic covers still on seats.Put in 340 and 727 from a wrecked 68 GTS,never should have sold it.

I agree semed to be a common package I looked at one recently at the Turlock CA swap meet . If it has a rim blow wheel pretty good chance it has an 8.75 axle however disk brakes are a wild card some have some don't.... 318's or slant 6 318 seems to be more common with this package.

Would that have the S13 suspension on the data plate/ That is the heavy duty package, basically 340 T-bars and rear leaves.

My '72 Duster was built with the Kelsey-Hayes manual disc brakes, and 8.75 rear axle, and was originally a 318 2bbl car with A/C.

a lot more then you would think came through like that. did it have a rim blow wheel too? probably had one originally. i parted one set up the same way. knew a guy with a 4 door set up like that too..

and the rear..

not too sure about that.. over the years i've seen a lot of 71 darts with a rimblow but no 8 3/4.
