I think the consensus here a couple weeks ago was mostly VHT.
Lots of folks like powdercoating.
Look up near the top Moparts logo - type in "wrinkle paint" in that Search box, and you'll get to the Moparts archives.
Lots of tips & info when you sift through the threads.

iagree Most recommend powder coating. VHT works very well if you really want to use a spray can. Heating the part(s) in an oven after painting(some even pre-heat before painting) will leave you with an even "wrinkle" and a harder, more durable finish.

That’s what I do/did.

If you want/need a finish as-per-oem, then paint is only option. That's what factory used.
I've never done any wrinkle powder that resembles factory.
Although it's much more durable. the "wrinkle" in it is not as "large-bold" as any paint.

I agree. I found that different paint/heat processes can replicate factory finishes. I've tried spraying a cold part and placing in in the sun (calm wind day), sprayed parts laying in the sun to heat and putting back into the sun, spraying cold parts (and pre-heated) and heating with heat lamps, and then also tried oven heating. Each process developed a different texture and I think each person should experiment with small pieces of sheet metal with different processes and paint film thickness to achieve the texture they are looking for.

I used VHT and a heatgun and heated section by section and it came out great. IMO. No real need for an oven in my opinion that just PO's the wife and she'll never let you hear the end of it anyway argue grin DAMHIK. wink

Notice I included oven heating last, I pulled that stunt while in high school, 1973 or so, on a pair of 383 valve covers (for heat dissipation). The smell lingered in my folks house for weeks, every time the oven was used. I suggest an oven in the yard or shop by a door.

You want to be able to open all the windows in you house for a LONG time if you do 'em in the over. That stuff really stinks !!!

Look for a cheap used oven that you can use for this type of thing. Keep it in your garage or shop. I'd never use the one in my house. Cleaning parts in the dishwasher is as far as I want to test my wife's patience.

I had great success by driving car till hot, removed air cleaner, gave a pre paint clean, sprayed air cleaner thoroughly with VHT wrinkle paint, reinstalled air cleaner on hot engine and closed hood.
Turned out great.

The photo I posted above of my 383 Road Runner wrinkle finish air cleaner I did with VHT and finished (heated) it with a Milwaukee heat gun. Yes I warmed up the metal with the heat gun, then painted it with the VHT and immediately went to it with the heat gun. It wrinkled quickly and evenly small sections at a time and never stopping until it was all wrinkled. I think it worked and looks okay for not being oven finished?

Sunny day + heat gun has worked for me ever since I wrecked the oven for about a month with a pair of Hemi valve covers... laugh2

If I haven't mentioned it already, I like to lay down a coat of black paint prior to wrinkle paint - helps attract the Sun's heat.
