WD40 soaking and it will make a mess, and would be better if the panels were removed.....I use it to remove over spray....It works without attacking the aluminum like paint stripper does.

I don't know whats bone head about painting it. Its way easier to clean than if left natural. I'd clean it up and either respray or if powder coating is preferred then remove and have the powder coating company strip and cost. Where I live powder coating isn't too crazy expensive. Had both my kirkey seats done for $60

Ok

Maybe a heat gun but that's a lot of work.

Airplane shops use Aircraft stripper, it is messy but it doesn't hurt the aluminum either up
I have a gallon in the shop made by Kleen Strip, I bought it at Wal mart scope
Follow the directions on the can and buy cheap throw away brushes to put in on and some plastic body putty spreaders to remove the stripper, along with plenty of rags and follow up what the instruction say on clean up wrench up
Make sure and use good gloves, that stripper was not nice to my skin realcrazy tsk

I'd definitely go with a good dewaxer wash and scuff with 220. For the tight areas, try the green scotchbrite. An epoxy primer over that and a good quality engine enamel or a hammertone(like rustoleum) so you can roll and brush it.. Simple, fast with good results.

Back when I detailed cars a guy was using solvent to take tree sap off a hood and he got distracted by a phone call and left the rag sitting on the hood. When he came back after the phone call was over and picked the rag up all the paint under the rag was gone.
