Hi Everyone, working on 72 Cuda suspension. Picked up a pair of spindles. After getting the article disc-o-tec I see I have a taller pair of spindles. They say they work with out any steering issues. Articles recommend shorter not taller spindle . Thoughts ? My other problem is I have the smaller pin style calipers. I wanted to put on the 11 3/4 rotors. Changing from drum brake set up. Where can I pick up a pair ? Thought of doing rears also . Would like to hear some input on this change over. Someone said look ar Ram man, tried to go to his site but BBB popped up and sounds like issues. Thx Phil

i have converted almost 50 setups using the tall spindles without ANY problems e-berg mentions, so don't be afraid to use them !
there will always be nay-sayers about those, but don't listen to 'em.
as to the calipers, i have only done a few pin style, so i really have no opinion on them.
the RAMMAN ? well, i won't comment. you will have to decide for yourself.

So where can I get the larger caliper brackets? Pin or slide? Drilled rotors?? Do I really need dust shields?

You can buy everything you need from Doctor Diff.

like andy says. up
in my opinion, toss the dust shields. if my caravan doesn't have dust shields from the factory, you don't need them either.

I agree with Andy, buy your caliper brackets from Dr Differential. I bought the slider type not the pin type and they worked out great.

No one reproduces the pin type 12” (11.75”) disk version.

This make for an incognito improvement for 70-72 and E-body factory disk cars. Really hard to spot unless you point them out. You do need to run at least factory 15” rims (or any 15” rim minimum)

I’ve only run 12” pin type caliper so I don’t have any comparison.

Been my observation that the dust shields, if you have them, stick out past the small rotors and the big rotors stick out past the shields. Back when you could boneyard those rotors that was my quick and dirty check to figure which one I was looking at without having to pull anything to measure.

Yep. Good observation.

In a car show or cruise-in with the car in the ground with wheels on it, you really got to get under it to spot that. Much easier to spot slider caliper.

If you already have a car with pin calipers you can swap to 12” disk without even bleeding the brakes. Just 2 bolts caliper off, 1 nut old disk off, 2 bolts swap adapter, 1 nut disk on, 2 bolts caliper back on.

I think Firm Feel makes a upper control arm specifically for the taller spindle to correct any geometry issues that are created by the taller spindle.

there was a mopar article about the taller spindles-----they put them on a car---put the car on a chassis table-----put the car in all angles of deflection and cornering and the result was better numbers in every category......

So at this point , I have the spindles, but wrong caliper brackets. great article. So now I guess I can buy rotors , brackets, etc from Dr diff. That being said, I should just buy the whole kit from him and sell the complete rotors, spindles etc. Need to price out and see what is the best way to go. Thinking now, if I buy lower ball joints and upper do you buy 72 cuda or 78 magnum cause you changed things over ??

Upper ball joints are the same,

Buy the lowers for the 72 Cuda.

You could go with fabricated spindles in whatever height you want. Here is an example of an oval track version sitting in my garage. Of course, as a race component, these got inspected weekly for cracks, separation, and damage.

Regarding the dust shields, although I've made my conversion already to the 11.75" larger rotors (and found a set of the correct pin-style caliper brackets for my pin-type calipers, I did not install the dust shields -- evidently they are different for the later A-body spindles that I put on. BUT, as I've been observing, the grease from, in particular, the upper ball joint (in the upper control arm) appears to be leaking... I used a synthetic grease... probably the reason they are leaking. My concern is that the synthetic grease will leak more and eventually make contact with the rotor and... the cause loss of brakes!

So, I'm planning to get a pair of the later style A-body dust shields and install them... as a hopeful protector of the possible ball joint leaking grease from making any contact with the rotor/disc.

I also want to adapt some kind of brake cooling duct attached to the spindle and/or the dust shield.

At this time, my car is still on jack stands.. finishing up the installed new engine, etc... should be running in April, then driving in May this year... then at track events June-July-August... etc and some car shows as well!
