I am wanting to run Drag Week hopefully this year. I currently have a Quikfuel 850 on my 451 Demon, and to be honest I have little idea where to start in the tuning of it. I am thinking of pulling it in favor of a self learning fuel injection setup. Either option is open obviously the QF 850 is already in hand and was fresh out of the box this past summer. I'm open to opinions from you guys on which to run.

Something like this is what I'm thinking. I chose this one because my intent is to build a 512 with TF270's on it in the near future.

A carb can be tuned to run good and get decent MPG. I put lots of time and effort into my 830 carb for drag week. It paid off in decent fuel economy. That process of learning to tune all ranges of a carb pushed me to EFI though. I have done 6 drag weeks total 2 of them with EFI.

With EFI instead of going home and drilling bleeds and changing jets I just pull over in a parking lot and type in the change I want to make.

What kind of laptop/tablet do you use to "tune" it?

For my system you can use any Windows, Apple, Linux whatever really. I am sure with Holley you can use any windows laptop, maybe options beyond that I don't know. Some of those kits also have handheld controllers that gives you some easy to reach changes.

My system is probably the most labor intensive but I would say easily the best $ per feature. I have an MS3X Sequential Coil on Plug setup from DiyAutotune.com. I built the ECU from a kit and had to build my own wiring harness.

I run a Megasquirt 3 with an expansion card that I build from a kit. Several drag week guys use the magasquirt stuff even in the early days of drag week. Its good stuff and has amazing features for the dollar. There is a couple of different Megasquirt vendors but I have been happy with DIYAutotune.com. When I have needed support they have been quick to answer and I have had great luck with all the stuff I have bought from them.

I really like the self learning efi systems. I will do one again when money allows. The last one I did, I had it plumbed like a carb. The return line was off the universal regulator down on the frame rail, and I dead headed it up to the Throttle body....Aeromotive A1000 pump and their universal regulator.

This allowed my to swap the spring in the regulator and go right back to a carb in less than an hour. All my brackets and such fit the throttle body and the carb.....It came in real handy one time the efi quit and I had to send it back to have it fixed.

So I would go efi, and carry the spring for the regulator and the carb with me as back up.

Thanks to you both.

Dragula that sounds like an interesting plan, I'll look into it.

Most people think you have to return all the fuel not used, but that is not true. You can have a a short dead head system off the regulator if you do it right.

I like the ones that look like a carb but have the ability to control timing and maybe even N2O and or boost....Keep it flexible, and it never gets old, and if needed, you can adapt to different race classes.

Also, if you have the ability to change the opening of the TB form 1:1 to progressive is really helpful on big engines....When you get it right, it can be way too snappy...S,aller motors might like it...

that regulator shows a 3/8npt thread, but a smallish diameter return fitting.
i was always taught that the return should be the same size or larger than the supply.
so what gives with the fitting ? shruggy

The small port is for boost reference, the return line is plumbed off the bottom of the regulator.

A dual-purpose, universal regulator for EFI or Carbureted and street or strip applications. Base pressure adjustable from 3 to 20 PSI with standard spring, (installed) or from 20 to 60 PSI with high-pressure spring (included). It offers the full flow and rock steady fuel pressure that only a dynamic, Aeromotive bypass regulator provides.

Capable of regulating any fuel pump between 100 and 250 GPH.
Fuel pressure rises on a 1:1 ratio when referencing boost.
All ports are 3/8′ NPT, with one inlet and three outlets on the main body and one return port on the bottom.
Bypass design provides the ultimate, dynamic fuel pressure control.
Note: (Requires a return line to be installed from the bottom of the regulator to the top of the tank.

thanks CD ! i never thought about a boost reference.
i should know better. CRS is taking over..........
that regulator [now] looks like what i need for what i have in mind.
with stating the return needs to be entered into "the top of the tank", could that mean i could install the return fitting into the fill tube of my car near where it enters the tank [69 charger] ?

Not sure, I think I’m plumbing it into the port on my fuel cell where I have my roll over valve. I don’t see why you couldn’t plumb it the way you are talking about though.
