I need to freshen up a 1969 stock round air cleaner with the wrinkle black texture. I'm thinking to sand blast it clean, primer, and then a spray can of wrinkle black paint from Harley-Davidson. Any other or better suggestions?

I've used VHT wrinkle paint with good results but I think powder coating is going to give you the best finish. If you really want to spray paint it, baking it in an oven will even out the wrinkle and make the paint harder.

Pre-heating is a good idea, and a heat gun works well during application.
I like to spray a coat of flat or semi gloss black before the wrinkle paint, so I can focus on texture.

I had good success with the VHT product as well.

VHT or Plasti-Kote( if they're still around. Placing on top of a heater will speed the process and cure it at the same time (after cooling) Even application / coats is the key to an even wrinkled finish twocents beer

I used VHT about 8-9 years ago and it still looks brand new. From what I found, heat is the most important aspect to the paint working as intended and getting an even finish.

I painted mine in the basement during Winter. The temp in the basement was around 55 but, I had two heaters pointing directly at the air cleaner. I think I would have had better results with even heat; like the temp in the room being 80 or doing it out in the sun, etc.
