You gotta wonder why after only 2500 miles, the back bumper is wrong

Was a rear bumper optional on a base model? If so, maybe it came without one, and the dealer or the owner installed an aftermarket one?

A full size rear bumper with step pads was always standard equipment on a Dakota

Clean truck. Rear bumper prob dealer installed. I worked at a Dodge dealer around then and I remember them putting on aftermarket bumpers on stripper trucks.

Clean truck but what do you do with it?

Good-looking truck, but I'd probably just ruin it with a drivetrain swap and wheels & tires.

I really appreciate the clean lines on those; it's not trying to be a Transformer or a big-rig.

That is definitely the wrong back bumper on that truck. I worked in the parts department of a Dodge dealer when those trucks were brand new at the time. I never sold or even saw a bumper like that, with those crazy looking ends caps. The bumper should be chrome, just as the front is. Nice looking truck ...though not $15k nice. LOL!.

Rear bumper wasn't standard when I bought my Dakota in 1988. I bought pretty much this same truck. Mine had no radio and no rear bumper and was dark green on the outside. Maybe bumper and radio were part of a package? But I had same color interior with all vinyl bench seat, 4cyl and manual transmission. And I had 15" plain steel wheels that looked like police wheels. MSRP was $8080. I traded in my 1976 Chevette that I bought for $125 and got $200 for trade in. Was the cheapest made in america car I could find. The base Chevy Cavalier or Plymouth Sunadance would have been cheaper, but I couldn't find one on a dealer lot that didn't have options and I needed a car quickly. I was a sophomore in college working my way through school, so low dough was key. If you look you can see the mounting boss on the front of the four cylinder engine that was used when the engine was put into front drive cars.

My girlfriend at the time bought me a killer Pioneer pull out radio for Christmas the first year I had it. Oh, and a blanket because the seats were cold in the winter. The following summer I managed to score a used Walker Evans Pre-Runner kit out of local autotrader that was missing some front pieces. I used the back bumper and roll bar from the kit. Man, brings back some memories. I loved that truck.

The more I think about it...I remember a couple stripper Dakota's we had on our new car lot, that came in delivered without rear bumpers. I think one was dark blue, with a gray vinyl bech seat. And in the parts dept. we always kept a few in stock, for our bodyshop, and the local bodyshop's we sold to. They came in semi gloss black, or chrome with black step pads.

No back bumper? Were trucks exempt from 5 mph impact requirements in 1988?

Yes. The statute specifically refers to "passenger cars," I believe. I haven't read it in a long time.

I can recall lots of brand new trucks on lots with no rear bumpers on them.

I worked at a Dodge dealer starting 1986 thru approx 2008 or so. And I can honestly say LOTS of pickups came with no rear bumper back then.

Ive installed aftermkts and a lot of them . Some chrome, some black, some silver. MOST but not all were some form of step bumper

Brought back a memory I had all but forgotten about.

When I worked at the used car lot, we had a white and blue version of this truck on the lot. A family straight out of the movie 'Deliverance' bought it, then brought it back a week later saying it was gutless and actually stopped while trying to go up a hill. It didn't make sense because the truck ran fine when we had it.

First thing I noticed when they came back was that the truck had had a big ol' reece hitch welded to it. I pointed it out to my boss (manager).

Long story short, they bought the truck to pull a horse trailer and a bed full of supplies. The truck had been w-a-y overloaded. As expected, they went into full 'you ripped us off' mode. Not sure what exactly my boss said (he wasn't one to be PC), but the couple were very quiet and looked upset when they left. Never saw them or the truck again after that.

Cool little truck albeit overpriced. If it were a V8 (I don't remember if they were available with V8 first couple of years) it would be much more interesting IMO. Still cool though being quite the time capsule.

No V8 version till I think early 90s . Most were the 3.9 V6
My dads went almost 300,000 miles before he wrecked it. That truck ran like a top from day one till the very end. Didn't burn a drop of oil or ever let him down once

First V8 Dakota's were the limited run Shelby versions in '89 with the 318 TBI....choices were red or white. I wish I still had my '93 Dakota Sport, 2wd short bed, all black bumper to bumper, with the Magnum 318-auto..she was quick off the line with the dealer installed 3.90 gear!

^^^^ Yup, except my Dakota Sport was black, with the silver "whooosh" stripes on the doors, and tinted windows 20%...looked sinister! thumbs
