looking at a500 and a518 parts breakdown on mopar parts giant. on a500 clutches and steels are same part numbers for front and rear of one section of the overdrive unit(not 904/727 part of trans) as they are for an a518. but an a518 shows 7 and 8 clutch/steel combo, where a500 shows 5 and 6 clutch/steel combo. i am sure that i am missing something minor but don't know what. thanks in advance.

Both O/D units are basically the same except for the number of discs and plates for the O/D so it all sounds right to me.

yes i see. but where does the extra room come from to add the extra clutch/steel in an a518? that is what i am not seeing. i have a diesel 4x4 od unit that has, i think, one clutch and steel more than a gas engine.

There is a thick pressure plate in that stack that that takes up the extra room.

A500 is a 904 based front half
A518 is a 727 based front half

I dont remember the differences other than that
