Need to buy a new dehumidifier for the basement. The old Kenmore girl just doesn't cut it anymore. 4 year old new construction, block walls, unfinished and a little over 1500 sq ft. Been looking on Amazon and reading the reviews. 5 star ratings on some but terrible reviews. Any recommendations?

I have a Midea brand and it’s been great so far. Bought it at Sams Club last year, will easily keep my garage in the 35-40% range in the middle of Summer and high humidity. I also have a Frididaire in the basement, the Midea outperformed it when I tested it in the same space.

I have a GE I bought at Lowes 3 years ago and it runs every day all day, and it works great . My FIL has two of the same and they work great for him as well.

I have one that has to be close to 40 years old and still works like a charm. That doesn't help you much BUT four years ago I bought a Danby from a surplus store (around $60.) and I run it constantly from April to October in my shop that's about 1/2 the size of your house. I didn't plumb the drain so I have to empty it manually every few days. Its subjected to a lot of dirt and dust in the shop so every couple years I tear it apart completely and clean it. Going into its 5th year this spring. Also, being in my shop I don't concern myself with any particular setting, I just want as much moisture out of the air as possible. I've always run the old one to the max in the basement as well. There is no such thing as "too dry" in the humid months.

You are close to buying a new one if it runs all day. My basement is completely underground and I kill any dehumidifier in 3 years. Only time it shuts off is in the dead of winter with temps below 20*. I've done the big box and local store brands with extended warranty, but now they are no longer repaired just replaced.( 1 time)
I suggest buying one step up for recommended square footage and how warranty issues are resolved, (in home or in shop). My latest purchase is a Soulas from Menards and it works ok for the last year and a half. They are cheap and would be money ahead to just replace it every 2 years for my situation. Ok rant off.

If your dehumidifier runs all day every day of the year I think you have other major problems you need to address - like WHY is there so much moisture down there and how to stop it !!

Its one thing to need one in a shop during humid summer months, its another to be using it to address a wet basement.

Sometimes the air is so dry you can see a small spark when you pet the cat...

Pet her back and then touch her ear and she gets zapped...It's worse through the winter months...

Shame it don't work on the wife...

As far as new ones last I heard they were all being made by a couple of companies and re branded so it probably doesn't matter much what you get. Id base it on reviews and how long a certain model has been around.

The one I'm using I got from a friend at work. It's newer and has the rounded shape to it but still only has one knob like the old style ones and none of the electronic junk. It has a fan that runs the whole time it's on but you can hear the noise it makes changes slightly as it cycles on and off. I have it on the lowest setting and it keeps the humidity at a decent level. It has a drain hose that I run into the floor drain so I don't know how often it would need to be emptied.
