I'm rebuilding a fun /crusing/ pump gas 340 motor. I'll be reusing the original 4bbl intake and TQ
I've found a new-in box 20-418-3 Comp cam & lifters set reasonably priced. Comp evidently doesn't make this cam anymore.
The specs on the cam is 275/284 462/482 lift 110
looks very similar to the original 340 cams. Anyone use this cam before? Do you like it?
Any insight would be helpful.
Thank you in advance!
Dan

From what I can see..... they still make it, it’s just not a -3 price code anymore.
It’s a -5 now....... 20-418-5.

It’s ground from the “dual energy” lobes, which are pretty mild and made to be easy on parts.

Since a -5 is the same price as a custom....... I’d probably do something a little different for that $$$.

I agree with doing something different. it will kill off some low and lower mid-range torque. should be noticeably more cam than stock with the 110lsa vs stock 114lsa in a 340.

What's the cost?

If your on a budget, and based on what you want to do with the car, probably not a bad cam.

the comp cams catalog states: "high performance street. superior high end. works with stock converter. choppy idle." the stock cam has 44 degrees of overlap and the comp cams has about 60 degrees. I guess you'll have to decide what you can live with.

Agreed. Depends on what the OP wants. This cam is bigger than stock no doubt, and will have more idle, but should work fine without having to change anything else to make it work fine, IMO.

Do you know what lift the "advertised " duration are measured at between the factory and Comp Cam cams? Are they both 0.006"?

Anyways, looking at the overlap based on "advertised duration" in a vacuum of everything can be misleading. The slow off the seat rate of the Comp Cam will make it feel less radical than the overlap numbers might otherwise suggest, IMO.

Although the advertised overlap is longer, it's overall overlap "area" is not that large due to the slower off the seat rate. Plus, it will be easy on parts.

Is there a better cam, probably. But if the price is right, I don't see this being a bad choice at all.

I haven't measured a stock 340 cam. I do have the service manual specs. I know on a 440 magnum cam to get the 268/284 numbers the closing ramp needs to be omitted. if I was using a 440 and wanted a cruise around cam I might consider this one, but 100 cubes less might make me a little gun shy. maybe showing my age but i'm just getting more conservative on cam selection. there is a guy around my area who uses the comp cams replacement (268/276, .464" lift) in his 340's and like it. I don't like that cam in 440's. everybody has to pick their poison.

What kind of car? Is it the RR in your pic? I think that cam might feel a little soft down low in a heavy B body with a stock converter.
