Happy New Year. There was a JH23N1B non-R/T 383 4bbl 71 Challenger in my town back in the eighties with a factory N96 shaker hood. I got the hood off of it.

Did they offer the shaker on a 383 4bbl 71 Barracuda? If so, anyone ever spot one?

Thanks Barry, Interesting the differences in the Challenger and Barracuda in 1971. You could get a 340 in a JH23 as well yet not available in the BH23.

How do you read this? What is the $114 option for? The non-R/T 383 version? The non-R/T 340 and all R/Ts are $94. Thx

Two different companies Plymouth and Dodge. Lots more differences in option and packages once one option is ordered. Take Rallye Dash on 1971 RT and a Rallye Dash on a 1971 Cuda, Dodge has it in the RT option and Plymouth has it as a separate option on their Cudas. Seen a lot of 1971 Challengers that were not RTs that had an N96 option on the Fender Tag, most I looked at were 1971 Challenger Convertibles but some were hard tops.

True,

But in 1970, they were in close alignment when it came to the Shaker option. It had to be a BS or a JS car to get one. The hemi cuda had the shaker standard, the hemi challenger optional shaker. Optional on all the others including the late availability with 340 and 383 cars.

But in 71 the shaker was made available to the JH line, but not the BH. Interesting.

I don't think they are as close aligned as you might think.

Plymouth appears to have been better at following the fresh air for all Hemi guideline than Dodge was. hemicudas got mandatory shaker hoods, Hemi Challengers did not. 'cudas could have red bubbles on red cars, Challengers could not (I understand that the promo car(s) may have had orange bubbles)

The shaker started out on Challenger as Hemi or Sixpack thing only, then added 383 and 440 4 barrel. However since it was an R/T only thing in 1970 it appears it was not available to the A66 Challenger 340. Where as you could get a 70 cuda 340 shaker.

As stated above, very true. And like I said, S series models (JS/BS) only for 70. The A66 Challenger was a JH so again, being in alignment, no shaker for the A66. However, for 71 we see the JH now available along with the JS/BS. But nothing for the BH.

Yep that looks like what they did.

Another oddity is in 71 no Sport Hood on JH 383 cars, yet you could get a shaker.

340 was late to the show for the 1970 Challenger line-up & the SHAKER hood was a late arrival also (with many delays) what's the earliest production Challenger with a factory installed SHAKER hood (not just coded for one)?
I think Plymouth kept these two OPTIONS under wraps and out of Dodge's eyes during the development of the E-bodies as long as possible - then it was up to Dodge to catch up

I believe the issue was that Plymouth didn't advertise the BH or BP cars as performance varieties, so the fresh air N96 hood was BS 'cuda ONLY (along with the 340 & AAR)

Dodge on the other hand was offering Challengers in many combinations, for '70 NO small block R/T - so the performance JH 340 (A66) car was born & the T/A was JH based
now they had performance JH & JS cars available, next there's a performance hood (or two N96 & N94) introduced as an available OPTION, why wouldn't it be available on performance engined JH & JS cars?
