I have a six pack challenger built in November of 1969. Would my car come with an aluminum or cast iron manifold?

I don't have the bulletins, but I would believe your car would have come with aluminum intake.
I think it was in Dec. or beginning of 70 for cast iron.

I don’t thing there was a hard switch in terms of a date. I think SOME December 69 builds were AL, but most were Fe by then. A November build could have been either, but more were probably Fe.

I think the supply chain was mixed for awhile.

I had a V code 1970 Charger R/T 4 speed car bought new in Victorville, CA in November of 1969 by the original owner.
I ended up becoming the 3rd or 4th owner of it in 1the spring of 1989 with the car being bought taken apart and missing the original Dana 60, 4 speed console six pack set up and the original block, the original owner had the short block replaced in the early spring of 1970. It had a SPD of 10-28-1969 under warrenty for some unknown reason shruggy.
I ended buying a late production 1969 dana 60 out of a 1969 Charger R/T and I was lucky enough to buy two different 1970 cast iron six pack set ups, one with non CA six pack carbs for the manual trannies and one CA set up for the automatic CA cars.
One of the cast iron intakes had a casting date of 10-21-1969 and the other one had a casting date of 10-28-1969 so that makes me think that Mopar switch to the cast iron 6 pack intakes in the early production run of the 1970 cars shruggy IHTHs thumbs

The story for decades is that Edelbrock couldn't keep up with A12 production even in '69...and more of those motors were planned for the '70 models.
Only '70 6-BBL car I knew back in the day (a buddy's GTX) was iron, but I don't know its SPD.
Maybe someone in the A12 Registry has a good idea of the date of the switch.

there is an "early" & a "late" cast iron 440+6 intake - casting number 2946275 VS. 2946276 (& then a third design with the same 2946276 part # on it between the carb mounts)
I've heard rumors about the first design being "porous" or some other casting flaw causing Chrysler to purchase every aluminum intake available at Edelbrock to keep the engine assembly line moving while the intake was being redesigned/reconfigured

the 1970 model year started production with the cast iron intake & in the time gap between "275" & "276" manifolds is where the aluminum manifolds are found during 1970 engine production

I've seen a number of November scheduled cars with aluminum intakes, but more importantly would be the engine assembly dates, when the engine was assembled at the Trenton engine plant

the first design "276" intake has a casting/parting line down the center of the manifold scope

who has access to a 1970 440+6 car with its original engine and an aluminum intake? what's the car's: assembly plant, SPD & engine assembly date?

As usual, Dan, you amaze me with information that I’ve never heard of and have pictures to prove it! My Superbird was build in Late Nov. I’ll look today at the assembly date of the block and casting info of the manifold. It’s cast iron but it’s the original one as far as I know. I bought it in 82 with 65,000 miles and the engine had never been apart.

iagree

Very informative. I'll have to check my assembly date. The engine is numbers matching and the manifold is aluminum, but I don't have a complete history of the car.

One thing I would like to add to this, when I had a 70 440+6 Cuda it had an aluminum on it when I purchased but came with the car's original cast iron.
Wanting to put it back to as original as possible I re-installed the cast iron intake and it had a noticeable seat of the pants difference in performance.
Maybe the cast iron was a bit more restrictive???? But my hiney felt it!

Again don't have specs but I think the cast iron is 45-50lbs.

The "heft-o-meter" says it feels like a Ford FE intake, ~ 80 lbs. vs. 25 ~ 30 for the aluminum? 2¢

When I bought my 70 V code Cuda in 74 it had the manifold changed to alum and the direct connection racing carbs. I also got the factory cast iron manifold and stock carbs that were taken off of it.

So you are saying the aluminum Edelbrock noticeably performed better?

Question: the 340 6-packs. Was there both alum. & cast iron in those as well? I haven't lifted mine in a while, but I think it is iron. Now I'm curious.

Found somebody weighed theirs, 41 lbs. Alum should be ~ 1/3 of that.

MANY years ago I saw that the FE Ford was 84 lbs. Sure felt about the same when lifted, guess the 84 was wrong?

The 41lbs above is way wrong.

Six barrel intake weights:
56 lbs for iron intake
17 lbs for aluminum intake

can you get pics of this casting number?

does anyone have an intake cast between Thursday 9/25/69 & Wednesday 10/22/69?
