Hey Eric!

I used to have issues painting small, odd shaped metal objects.

Laying flat, they could stick to whatever they were on.

Not anymore!

With one of the magnets you gave to me under the cardboard to stabilize another one on top of the cardboard & then protected with masking tape, this is possible. beer

That is a good idea. I just painted my steering shaft with new u-joints about an hour ago, tied to a piece of wire.

Clever solution.
I guess if you have to paint the edge that's attached to the magnet, you can do that later.

Barry & Eric: both fine folks.

That is a very good solution to a problem that plagues all of us. Thanks for sharing. I will definitely give that a shot next time I'm painting small parts. up

Not to POO POO a good idea, for a common problem. But you need strong magnets and a very good flat surface on your part to make that work. The slightest of bumps or air pressure while painting and it is so top heavy it is hitting the floor and destroying your prep. It obviously worked for your application but just to note precaution by those who may try it. twocents

These are very strong magnets.

I set it up inside the shop & then walked it out back to spray it. Through two doors each way & about 100 feet of overall travel.

It remained standing the whole time.

good deal Barry ! i wish i had gotten more of those things out of the dumpster than i did !

for those of you wondering, the magnets in question are 1/2" square, and 1/4" thick. while that seems like a wimpy, useless size, THOSE THINGS STICK !!!!! eek
i have no idea what they are made of, but when placing two together, you WILL give your fingers a pinch, ending in a blood blister if not VERY careful !
and getting two apart can tax the patience of a saint.

Done that a few times with the blood blisters & one cut where they snapped together just barely catching a finger.

Years ago when I used to install alarm systems, we sometimes used rare earth magnets on certain contacts. Only about 3/8 diameter but they sure packed a punch!
