Teflon paste like Permatex. This has worked for me as well. As mentioned, you will get much more reliable sealing with studs vs. bolts. I can attest that they make fitting headers more challenging on a BB B-body, but it can be done.

For my manifold studs I used Loctite 577 along with the 7649 activator. Tried all regular autopart store sealant items, none worked. Got the 577 from Grainger.

On a side note I would suggest useing the double end shouldered (stock type) studs & you can trim the outer fine threaded end to ease header fitment. You only need enough threads so the nut will fit flush when tightened & any more hampers fitment.
