I'm enjoying watching the guys on the spike TV show Detroit Muscle restoring their 69 Charger. This weekend's episode had them restoring the rear end. Quite a job and my head was spinning with all the technical work they did. One thing they stated which I was surprised about was that the 8 3/4 rear was not original for their non-R/T Charger. I would have thought that the 8 3/4 was standard??? Would a 318 2bbl Charger get a 7 1/4 rear?

I think you could get either. I had a '71 318 Charger with a tiny rear end (7-/14" I guess) and a '73 318 Charger that had a 8-3/4".

8 1/4 was standard in a 70 Charger 318 I worked in a few years back.
Slant six cars had 7 1/4 rear axle.

I saw that and they were probably mistaken. I know the two '67 Chargers that I parted (one 318 and one 383) both had 8-3/4 rears.

I question that when they said it.

I've seen lots of B-Body 318 cars that came factory stock with an 8-3/4 rear axle.

My 67 Satellite was a 273 car and came stock with an 8-3/4 rearend (2.94 single wheel).

The 67 Satellite that I had back in the late 70's was a 318 car with an 8-3/4 with a 2.94 suregrip that was factory.

Kayse can't keep up at all now. lol

Off topic slightly, that was quite a project wasn't it? I was lost after about 10 minutes. Definitely something I would farm out. Those guys certainly know their stuff.

I read in a Mopar magazine, a story about a guy with a late build '69 Charger that had a 383 2 barrel and a 2.71 geared 8 1/4" axle. Original car.

For the 1969 model year (if I read it correctly) and you go by the Chrysler parts books and sales literature, the 225 cyl got the 7 1/4 axle and the 318 got the 8 1/4 axle with a 2.71 gear ratio. If you wanted a lower gear with/without suregrip, it would have been the 8 3/4 axle.

I own a '69 318 Coronet parts car with a 8 1/4 and I parted out a '69 318 Coronet years ago with a 8 3/4, so I've seen them both ways.

I skimmed through their Youtube video on this car -

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MsdhPC-DL54

I just noticed they didn't add any additional bracing to the chassis, no frame connectors, cowl bracing, or anything I can see
