Trying to get info on how much or how little a piece of 50 yr old O.E. passenger glass can be polished to remove scratches

Who out there has had this service done? Anyone have any names of people who do this sort of thing?

Guidance/suggestions/pitfalls to avoid . . . any relevant info would be greatly appreciated

thanks

If the scratch will catch your finger nail, it will be difficult to get out. If it can even be done. And there will be a little bit of distortion there. Even wiper scuffs can take a lot of time to get out. It must be done very slowly and with a good amount of water to keep the temp down. I have a kit that I have used for years on my old glass. But I have not had any luck removing actual scratches. It only puts a bit of the gloss back on the surface. And even that takes a lot of time.

I did a wiper scratch in a windshield with a DA and 1500 grit paper. Looking back, it came out really well, but it was more luck than anything. It probably should have ruined the windshield.

I had a side window in my '62 convertible that had some pretty serious scratches. I took the window to a local glass shop and they polished it out. It was deep so it did leave some distortion.

I bought some cerium oxide polishing compound, made for polishing glass. Went up to the local Harbor Freight and bought some cotton polishing pads, they were large cone shaped and put on a drill motor. You have to keep the polishing compound wet when doing the job, keep a spray bottle handy when polishing. You have to keep it wet and you must keep moving. Stay in one spot to long and it will build up heat and could possible crack the glass. Takes time but it will remove the fine scratches. If you can feel it with your finger nail as stated earlier, the best you can do is shine it up a little without distorting the glass. Take your time and good luck.

You didn't say what the glass was for, but if you are looking for perfect results and new glass is still available, then that is the way to go.

Polishing can definitely help the appearance of old OE glass but in my experience it never comes back to looking like new if that's what you are wanting.

If new glass is not available for your application, then polishing is your only option but as stated already be careful.

Thanks for all replies, my car scored 985 at MCACN but was dinged for wrong passenger glass. I know ECS is out there for repop, but I may have found that O.E. 1969 piece of glass and would have it professionally polished, if I can find someone out there that can do it

I'll know more in a few days as to the quality of the glass, i.e. scratches,

I used these guys to polish a piece of door glass for my car. It had some light scratches running vertically. Very professional outfit and they did a nice job.

I can dig up the paperwork to refresh my memory if you like. I marked up the glass with masking tape flagging all the areas that required work.

I will take any and all help on this one, if you can get to your paperwork w/o too much hassle to kind of give me an idea of what to expect, that would be great

thanks
