If the scratch will catch your finger nail, it will be difficult to get out. If it can even be done. And there will be a little bit of distortion there. Even wiper scuffs can take a lot of time to get out. It must be done very slowly and with a good amount of water to keep the temp down. I have a kit that I have used for years on my old glass. But I have not had any luck removing actual scratches. It only puts a bit of the gloss back on the surface. And even that takes a lot of time.

I did a wiper scratch in a windshield with a DA and 1500 grit paper. Looking back, it came out really well, but it was more luck than anything. It probably should have ruined the windshield.

You didn't say what the glass was for, but if you are looking for perfect results and new glass is still available, then that is the way to go.
Polishing can definitely help the appearance of old OE glass but in my experience it never comes back to looking like new if that's what you are wanting.
If new glass is not available for your application, then polishing is your only option but as stated already be careful.

I used these guys to polish a piece of door glass for my car. It had some light scratches running vertically. Very professional outfit and they did a nice job. I can dig up the paperwork to refresh my memory if you like. I marked up the glass with masking tape flagging all the areas that required work. https://glassrestorationinc.com/car-glass-repaired.php
