Any advice is appreciated.
Friend has a 54 New Yorker, 331 Hemi, WITH power steering so the generator has an output shaft that drives the power steering. Don’t want to convert to an alternator.

Is it possible to convert the stock unit to 12 volts? Or buy a converted unit?
I see these, but have no idea how well they work.
https://www.vintageautogarage.com/1...r-12V-Field-Coils-Brush-p/ag12-4060k.htm

I think this generator design was in use about 1950-54.

Any ideas?

Without knowing anything about that exact generator I'll just say sure, of course it is possible. Is it easy or cost effective, heck if I know. But as long as you have a housing and a rotating shaft you can build an alternator.

If you're asking if there is a drop in conversion kit then I'm sure the answer is no.

I have read on the John Deere boards that a six volt generator may charge the battery adequately in a twelve volt system if simply equipped with a 12V regulator.
Never tried it myself though. Also a '50's tractor does not have much electrical demand.

I'll bet you can get a very similar looking generator with the correct voltage - are there any more shops in existence that could help? work
Everything nowadays seems to be "throw it away and buy a new one made in China"...

My link is a conversion kit that doesn’t require rewiring the armature. But I don’t know how well these work. Rewiring the arm would be fine if we could find someone that does it. Or of course finding someone that sells converted units, which I doubt that person exists.

Wondering what others have done about this...

Try posting your question on p15-d24.com . That forum is dedicated to Mopars older than 1960 and has a lot of knowledgeable members. Somebody should be able to point you in the right direction.

All you need is the correct 12 volt field winding's and a 12 volt regulator. The 6 volt generator can work with just a regulator but most likely will have a short life.

I wonder about Tri-5 Chevys that used a similar setup, maybe someone does those but could handle the Mopar unit.
There's also a 12V generator for Ford Flathead 6V applications, maybe Speedway in Lincoln NE sells them.
The Ford unit wouldn't drive a PS pump, but again, maybe the guy building them could do your buddy's.

There is a guy in Kent WA that does starters and alternators. I was told he may do older generators.
I think it is 'The Rebuilder' and he is in a small shop. 253-854-0904

Or try Romaine Electric 425-264-1700

Which is what the ‘conversion kit’ is in the op link. I wonder how well they work.

I will forward those contacts to him. Certainly worth a few calls. Thanks

It is possible and was common many years back (70's and earlier). If you hit a brick wall try Hemmings classifieds under services offered. beer

There is a place local to me that does all sorts of electric motors. I have taken old 6v generators to them all the way up to 2-300 HP three phase electrics. They do good work and fast turn around. If anyone can rewind those fields to 12v specs, it would be them.
Oh yeah, they are mennonite! Kind of ironic I know. For those who dont know what mennonite is, they are sorta like Amish but not quite as strict with the religion.

My old man used to rewind old Autolite 6v generators for indian motorcycles. I think he simply figured out how many turns the fields needed for 12v by trial and error. They used to sell conversion field coils for them at one time.

Mopar switch all their brands to 12V in 1956, my Father in Law 1956 New Yorker had the same design generator with the power steering pump mounted piggy back on the rear. Both of my 1957 Chryslers had a separate power steering pumps shruggy
I think1956 and earlier Mopars with power steering where power assisted like the Fords and Chevy had back then, I believe 1957 was the first year Mopar went to the full power steering going through the steering boxes and not to a power assisted ram work scope

Mr.Cab Racing and winning with Mopars since 1964. (Old F--t, Huh)

Does the Chrysler unit use the same power steering drive as GM?

Danchuk sells an alternator in a generator type case that accepts a stock GM pump.

https://www.danchuk.com/ItemForm.aspx?Item=18666

This guy converts generators to alternators but the site says not possible with power steering. Might not hurt to call to see if that's changed. Pricey $$$.
